Leh-Srinagar road thrown open, death toll rise to 193

Jammu, Aug 13: With the consistent efforts of Army and GREF the Leh -Srinagar road which was disconnected due to washing away of the bridge has been thrown open for vehicular movement today .
An army spokesman giving information said that 100 meter Nurla Bridge was rebuild within a record time of 48 hours by the joint efforts of engineers of GREF and army. The vehicles which were stranded on the National Highway for the last seven days have been allowed to proceed in the evening today, he informed.
However, rescue team recovered three more dead bodies from the debris. With the recovery of three bodies the death toll has risen to 193.The cloudburst incident has also badly affected the people of Kargil people as 300 people mostly employees are still trapped in Kargil.
Indian Army and paramilitary personnel have also erected relief camps and are providing food and medical aid to locals, as they begin to rebuild their lives in the flood ravaged region of Leh, Ladakh. Leh was devastated after the region was ravaged by flash floods caused by a sudden cloudburst on August 6 that claimed over 150 lives, and injured hundreds of others. Personnel of the Indian Army, Air Force and other paramilitary forces are conducting rescue and relief operations. The GREF General Reserve Engineer Force and Border Roads Organization engineers erected pontoon bridges to re-establish communication links in and around Leh, the main city in remote Ladakh region.
Earlier Lt General B. S. Jaswal, Northern Command Chief who visited the injured in the Army hospital and took an aerial survey of the flood devastation said that more than 7,000 soldiers were conducting rescue and relief work in the region which shares borders with China and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
Residents have been facing hardship as many villages have been completely flattened by the turbulent rivers of mud.
