Raids by sales tax deptt trigger protests at Kanak Mandi | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 14: Raids by the officials of sales tax department today triggered protests at the ever-busy and congested Kanak Mandi with shopkeepers blocking vehicular traffic at City Chowk. The officials, who had reports that some shopkeepers at Kanak Mandi were indulging in the violation of VAT norms, swooped in on the market in the morning and seized some items. This sparked off strong protests with the shopkeepers alleging that they were being harassed for no fault of theirs.Amidst raising of slogans against the department, the shopkeepers later blocked the nearby City Chowk for vehicular traffric.The goods seized by the officials were, however, later returned on the intervention of the representatives of shopkeepers' union. Talking to The Early Times, some shopkeepers said the officials seized goods from some business concerns, alleging that their owners did not have any bill of the items displayed by them. Raughnath Bazar Businessmen Association president Surinder Mahajan said the raids were conducted by the department in a hurry. The shopkeepers should have been given time till Monday to explain their positions, he added. As the rules pertaining to sales tax and VAT were complicated, the department ought to have given time to shopkeepers to rectify their mistakes, if any, former president of Small Scale Industries Association, Anil Suri said.When contacted, sales tax commissioner said he had asked the officials to submit him a detailed report as regards the today's raids and subsequent protests by shopkeepers. |
