EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Aug 14: Come Independence Day, and the people become aware of another day of captivity and harassment coming knocking on their doors.
Besides the region being turned into high security forte, the commoner is too put to toil by the police and administration for intermittent frisking and questioning that ruins the whole week preceding August 15.
This time around the measures are harsher and stringer for men and machinery alike as three-tier security arrangement mooted by the authorities has been put in place to make the function smoother and incidents free.
Sources, in the wake of making the Independence Day success, disclose that additional companies of police and paramilitary forces have been moved in here for a strict vigil." This has brought the important installation under the forces' hawk eye for a complete vigil so that any misadventure tried by forces inimical may be thwarted to make the Independence Day trouble free,' say the sources.
Surprise checks up and frisking conducted by the police at different places and venues have become frequent since past week that has obviously brought in public ire for being unreasonably being harassed.
"Unnecessarily, police stops and check our identity. I had to stop my vehicle at many checkpoints to show papers of my vehicle to police. It is really disturbing and embarrassing also, " Vikram Pradhan, an Insurance agent rued.
He said that every year on the eve of Independence Day, people are being "harassed unnecessary" for security reasons. "This more deployment due to security reasons is giving more tough times to the commoner," he added.
An police officer, wishing not to be named, while monitoring the frisking and checking operation at Vikram Chowk, said security has beefed up in the city and additional companies of police and paramilitary forces have been deployed.
"All the important installations have been put under three-tier security vigil," he said adding, " common man's ruth is genuine about him being frisked often but he should also understand the gravity of the situation in the state and cooperate," said a the police officer.
The police men are conducting surprise frisking of vehicles and passersby in the temple of city. The vehicles entering into the city from all the periphery areas and from other states are being thoroughly checked and scanned.
On the roads leading towards Parade Ground and in the populated areas and main markets, security force personnel are seen positioned after every five steps. M A Stadium has been turned into a garrison.
Hotel owners said that from last couple of days, police has intensified raids on hotels to check the credibility of visitors. Internet cafes owners have also been directed to record the whereabouts of the internet surfers.
"The entire city is classified into eight zones with each zone being supervised by a senior superintendent of police who is further bestowed with extra powers to make the on spot assessment of the situation and take necessary action if required," told a senior police official adding that that no restrictions have put on peoples' free movement but a clinical vigil is kept upon their movement..
A special group of college students, who are a part of civil defense team formed by SSP city, has been tasked to keep eye on any miscreant or trouble makers also.
