Night before I-Day: High alert on IB, 12 LeT ultras sighted across Manguchak in Samba | Additional police nakas laid on Kathua-Jammu, Jammu-Akhnoor roads | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 14: The atmosphere was extremely tense all along the International Border (IB) here the night before Independence Day. Reason: The movement of two groups of 12 odd Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants was picked up this afternoon across the fencing in Manguchak area of Samba. All BSF outposts on the IB and the border police posts in the area were put on high alert, police sources said and added multiple ambushes were also laid in the border fields and on the known infiltration routes. Sources said additional police nakas were laid on the Kathua-Jammu and Jammu-Akhnoor roads and all the vehicles coming from the border areas were being checked thoroughly."They want to disrupt the I-Day celebrations, but the forces have been alerted to foil their attempts," the sources added. Sources said while at least eight militants had come from the Pak Rangers' Bhopalpur forward post, four had come from their Chak Phora post. They were sighted in two groups close to the IB, the sources added. Their movement was, however, picked up by the alert BSF jawans at about 12.30 pm, two hours or so after the two sides exchanged sweets on the eve of the Pak Independence Day today. Sources said after spending few minuts close to the IB, they were seen moving back to the Pak forward posts.As they could make attempts to breach the barbed wire fencing tonight, all the BSF outposts along the IB had been put on high alert, the sources added. Quoting intelligence inputs, sources said the militants were expected to make desperate attempts to breach the fencing tonight.When contacted, SSP, Samba, JL Sharma said all the border posts of police had been alerted and multiple ambushes laid in the border fields and on the Samba-Jammu stretch of the national highway.The Kathua police too had laid additional police nakas on the Kathua-Samba road. SSP Gareeb Dass said the border police posts had been asked to remain vigilant as the night before the I-Day was crucial. SSP Sharma said village defence committees (VDCs) in the district were patrolling the streets and inner areas in the border villages. The border residents too had been asked to remain vigilant, he added. Meanwhile, police intensified checking on the Jammu-Akhnoor road tonight with the placing of additional nakas at different places. All vehicles coming from Kanhachak and other border villages were being subjected to thorough checking, the sources added.Police teams also carried out surprise checking in the city hotels and lodges and asked their managers to contact them in case any suspicious person checked in their establishments.Cops of special branch of CID too had been alerted by SSP Rajinder |
