Strengthen VDCs to counter militants’ threat, demands BJP | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 16: Following resurfacing of militancy related violence in some parts of the state, a section of high officials in the police Department as well as Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leadership favour strengthening and overhauling the Village Defence Committees (VDCs). BJP leaders, particularly, have been consistent in demanding not only increase in the number of Village Defence Committees but some emoluments to the VDC members which could encourage them in taking on the militants. The BJP leaders have also demanded better weapons for the VDC members According to well placed sources, Security forces, including the troops guarding the border in Poonch and Rajouri districts, have been asked to intensify their search operations in the border villages in the twin districts following reports that large groups of militants have infiltrated into the Jammu belt in recent weeks. Official sources said that these instructions have been given soon after receipt of reports that groups of infiltrators, most of them belonging to the dreaded Lashkar-i-Toiba outfit had sneaked into Jammu and Kashmir in recent weeks and while the majority of them are still stuck in Poonch and Rajouri districts others had managed to travel to Doda and Kishtwar districts. This had been evident from the armed attacks launched by these militants and by the number of encounters between the infiltrators and the security forces. Sources said that the fresh batches of infiltrators, who have crossed into Jammu sector from across Poonch, Rajouri, RS Pura, Akhnoor and those who have crossed into Kashmir from across Kupwara, Keran, Karnah and Tangdhar, have been given two different instructions. While those who have fanned in various parts of the Kashmir valley have been told to lie low and simply provide indirect assistance to groups of youth indulging in violence in the valley, those operating in the Jammu region have been directed to intensify their attacks on security pickets, political leaders and Government installations. The official sources said that the security forces and the intelligence agencies have been directed to keep a watch on these militants who had instructions to foment communal tension and conflict in some pockets in the Jammu region, especially in Poonch, Rajouri, Doda and Kishtwar districts besides some pockets of Udhampur district. Sources said that top functionaries of the police, posted in Jammu, have conveyed to the state Government and top police authorities that additional companies of police and paramilitary forces be deployed in the sensitive Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kishtwar and Udhampur districts as part of the drill to strengthen and upgrade the security grid required for meeting new challenges being posed by agencies across the LOC. Already several companies of police and paramilitary forces have been withdrawn from various pockets in Jammu region for deployment in Kashmir valley for dealing with the stone throwing protesters and this step had left some sensitive areas in the Jammu region vulnerable to militant attacks.
