EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 16: After remaining suspended for two days due to security reasons and bad weather conditions, the annual Amarnath yatra today resumed from here with a new batch leaving for the holy cave shrine.
The batch of 875 pilgrims, comprising 514 men, 145 women, 8 children and 208 sadhus, left in a cavalcade of 24 vehicles from the base camp of Bhagwati Nagar here this morning, police sources said.
With today's batch, as many as 86,072 pilgrims from different parts of the country had left from here for onward journey to pay obeisance at the 3,880 metre high cave shrine in the Valley.
The yatra remained suspended for last two days due to security reasons and inclement weather conditions in Valley.
This was the sixth time that the pilgrimage was halted since its commencement on June 30.
Meanwhile, for the second consecutive day today, no pilgrims left Baltal and Nunwan Pahalgam base camps for the Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas.
As the devotees were stopped at Jammu for security reasons on August 14 and 15, there was no yatri at Baltal and Nunwan Palahgam base camps, official sources said here.
Yesterday and today no devotee left for the cave shrine, they said, adding a fresh batch of pilgrims had left Jammu this morning which will be reaching here by this evening.
The pilgrims will proceed towards the shrine tomorrow morning from the base camps, the sources said.
Chhari Mubarak, the holy silver mace of Lord Shiva, will leave Dashnami Akhara near here on August 19 for the holy shrine for which the authorities had made adequate security and other arrangements.
About 4.5 lakh devotees have had darshan of the self-made ice-Shivlingam in the cave shrine since the commencement of the two-month-long pilgrimage from July 1. All the devotees had since left for their homes after darshan.
The annual yatra will concluded on August 24, the 'Shravan-Purnima'.
Meanwhile, Buddha Amarnath yatra in Poonch district was also suspended today from Jammu due to bad weather, officials said.
No new batch was allowed to leave from Jammu to Buddha Amarnath Shrine Mandi hills of Poonch district from here due to inclement weather conditions and heavy rains enroute, they said.
The yatra, which started on August 13, has been suspended for the first time. As many as 4,000 pilgrims have left for the shrine till now.
