Cocoon worth Rs 2.08 cr produced in Udhampur | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT UDHAMPUR, Aug 16: A twenty-day Auction Market for dry bivoltine cocoons produced in Udhampur district was organized by the Sericulture Development Department, Udhampur in which 4000 farmers and 62 parties of buyers from various parts of the country participated in the auction market. During current financial year's spring crop 1.28 lacs Kgs of green cocoons were produced as against 1.23 lacs Kgs during last fiscal in spite of prolonged drought conditions. The farmers earned an amount of Rs. 2.08 crore from the sale of their produce for spring crop as against 1.23 crore during the year 2009-10 indicating an increase of Rs. 85 Lacs over last year. About 90 percent of cocoon was auctioned at an average rate of Rs 551 per Kg, 7 percent at the rate of Rs 483 and 3 percent of cocoons at an average rate of Rs 397 per Kg whereas highest bid touched to Rs 719 per Kg which is a record for the State till date. The quality improvement and demand for bivoltine cocoons was the maidn driving force for the high prices of cocoons in the district, said Deputy Director Sericulture Udhampur. He also informed that about 1000 farmers had already delivered their cocoons crop in green conditions during the month of April, 2010 for grainage and commercial purposes. He said that the silk warm seed for second crop is also under distribution and hoped for a good response from the farmers. |
