ET wake up call turns true | 2 locals die of drowning due to lack of bridge in Ujhan | | EARLY TIMES REPORT RAJOURI, Aug 16: Although Early Times had already carried out a story few days ago about possibility of loss of lives in Ujhan area due to non-completion of bridge connecting the area to the rest of world, a woman and her grand son have been drowned in the Darhal stream while crossing it the other day. Police sources told Early Times that Noor Jahan an aged woman was on her way from Dhandkote village Sain Ganji Ziarat drowned in Darhal stream when she was to cross the stream. Her grand son Ali Mohammad tried accompany her tried to save the life of his grand mother but he also drowned resulting in two deaths on the same day. Sources said that a dozen cattle have also drowned in the same location while crossing this Nallah. Early Times recently had highlighted the issue of non-completion of bridge over this stream in the area for the last 34 years and had also reported the possibility of loss of human lives while crossing this stream which turned true but authorities had turned deaf ear to the report and had not initiated the work on the bridge. Government had initiated work on 153 meters span Bridge in Ujhan area of Darhal Rajouri in 1976 and the department has just constructed 2 metres of it in 34 years. Against an estimate of Rs 15 crore, government had released meager Rs 5 lakh for its construction for the last 34 years which too in installments. Keeping in view the need of 20,000 population living in Kasian, Badanoo, Dhan Rakiban, Ujhan, Chatyar, Dhandkote and Darhal areas, State Government in 1976 announced construction of a Bridge to connect these areas with the rest of world following which the work was handed over to Pubic Works Department but though they could not continue work on it either due to lack of funds or due to lethargic attitude of the engineers, it was handed over to some other construction company. Having 153 meters span, Ujhan bridge is waiting government attention for the last 34 years. The work of the bridge construction was snatched by the government from R&B department in 2004 after 30 years and handed it over to Jammu & Kashmir Project Construction Company (JKPCC) but still the Company has also not started work on it. As per sources, JKPCC has conducted re-survey of it and has suggested Rs 10.71 crore for construction of single lane bridge in the area. However the proposal is somewhere gathering dust in the cupboards of some almirah in the Secretariat. Though Executive Engineer of JKPCC Abdul Majeed Wani said that the project will be undertaken under NABARD scheme and it may take few more time to get approval of funds, locals said that administration is watching the episode like mute spectator. A local leader Waseem Mirza said that they are going to take to the streets and hold protest demonstration against the authorities for ignoring the apathy of 20,000 residents. |
