Prominent persons to woo separatists! | Who will talk, what and with whom? | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Aug 16: Even as Kashmir is up in flames, preparations are on for getting the separatists especially Syed Ali Geelani to the negotiating table. A local news agency quoting highly informed sources made the revelation today saying a team of prominent citizens had been entrusted the job of getting separatists onboard. Last year the Home Minister offered secret talks to the separatists. It was opposed by most of the separatist leaders. A moderate face in Mirwaiz Hurriyat, Fazal Haque Qureshi became a casualty. He was shot at outside his residence. The shot has crippled him for life. It also caused ripples in the Hurriyat Conference with leaders like Nayeem Ahmad Khan and Zaffar Akber demanding dissolution of the general council and the executive council of the conglomerate. A few months later, the government of India accepted that the secret dialogue had not taken off. Today's Kashmir is different. Leaders like Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Professor Abdul Ghani who have been advocating dialogue have refused to talk. Mirwaiz even refused to get involved at Track II level. A team comprising academicians and bureaucrats visited Srinagar last month. They sought an appointment with Mirwaiz who refused to meet them. "There can be no dialogue at any level unless killings are stopped", he made clear. Since his release, Geelani has been walking on a razor's edge. He had to clarify his position repeatedly following allegations that he had compromised his position. Geelani, however, is ready fore dialogue if New Delhi accepts Jammu Kashmir as a disputed territory. This seems a distant dream at least for the time being. So the chances of getting Geelani on the negotiating table are also bleak. And last but not the least; the leaders are keenly watching the mood of the people. The defiant people are against any engagement with New Delhi. They want to continue the agitation despite all odds. They went tot the extent of setting ablaze the effigy of Hizbul Mujahideen Supreme Commander, Syed Salah-ud-Din. The stunned and shocked commander had to issue a clarification. This happened in Kashmir for the first time in past two decades. In the changing scenario what can the team of prominent citizens achieve? |
