Police denies shoe-thrower Jan, a colleague with sound mind | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 17: Police authorities today emphatically denied that the police official Abdul Ahad Jan,who had flung his shoe towards Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah during the Independence day function in Srinagar ,was mentally sound as claimed by his son, Showkat Ahmed. Senior police functionaries said that Abdul Ahad Jan was psychic and had been undergoing treatment for a long time. A senior police officer said that it was the result of his erratic behavior that he had been denied promotion which had provoked him to do funny things while on duty. The officer said that since he was considered a risk to the police department he was placed under suspension. He said Ahad always wanted to create some scene which would attract the attention of the Government so that he may get his job back. Defending the Government action on suspending 15 police officials on charge of negligence, the police officer said that since Abdul Ahad Jan's demeanour was known to all police officials, his entrey into the stadium evokes suspicion as security drill had been done for several days in the stadium and each security official knew each other who were to be deployed on the independence day. "It was their duty to stop Abdul Ahad Jan. Atleast they could have ensured that he did not occupy a seat in the VIP enclosure," the officer said. In reply to another question the police officer ridiculed the assertion of Jan that he hurled the shoe towards the Chief Minister and shouted pro-Azadi slogans to register his anger against the killing of civilians in the police firing. "Since Abdul Ahad had not been anywhere found to be the part of the groups of demonstrators protesting against the civilian killings, his assertions prove him wrong and put him as a suspect that engineered the Bakshi stadium incident to gain peoples' sympathy and force the Government to revoke the suspension order served upon him, " said the police official . Meanwhile another police officer stated that Ahad had not gained entry into the stadium on the basis of a pass issued by a politician belonging to the opposition party and hinted that a senior National Conference leader had been seen in the past pleading for his reinstatement He however denied that Jan's action had the backing of some National Conference leaders |
