Four OGWs held for providing SIMs
8/17/2010 11:28:28 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 17: In a major breakthrough, security forces today broke a nexus between militant sympathisers and some SIM card dealers in the mountain-locked Kishtwar, Reasi and Rajouri districts by laying hands on four persons for their alleged acts of making available SIMs to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commanders in lieu of huge sums of money. With their arrest, police hoped to get vital clues to the activities of LeT militants and their hideouts in the three districts of the region. Mohammad Shafi, son of Noor Mohammad, was picked up by police from his residence at Tipri Bonjwan in Kishtwar for having allegedly supplied two SIMs to a LeT district commander Police came to know about his alleged LeT links after the arrest of Shafi Pathan, a top militant and deputy of the outfit's district commander Mohammad Ishaq Bhutt alias Ateeq, from a Kishtwar area on July 17 last. Police sources said Shafi had taken two SIMs in his name from a mobile phone dealer at Kishtwar and handed them over to Ateeq, who later given them to Pathan. Two days, or so before Pathan's arrest, Ateeq was killed by security forces in a gunbattle on the Kishtwar outskirts. Shafi was alleged to be in regular touch with Ateeq and Pathan. Sources said he had been keeping the militants abreast of the movement of police and security forces in and around Kishtwar. This had often led to the failure of their operations to take on Ateeq and his associates, the sources added. When Pathan fell in police trap, two SIMs were recovered from him.
During his interrogation, he told police that the SIMs were actually provided to Ateeq by Shafi. Shafi was today taken into custody from Tipri Bonjwan and booked under section 13 of Unlawful Activities Act and 120-B of RPC.
Sources said some more persons were likely to be arrested for supplying SIMs to militants active in Kishtwar areas.
All these militant sympathisers were making efforts to give boost to the otherwise waning militancy in Kishtwar district, the sources added. Another militant sympathiser was Monday apprehended by security forces from Relan in Gulmul area of Reasi.
He was identified as Ghulam Mohammad (30), son of Jalaludin, of Relan. A farmer by profession, he was allegedly involved in the
supply of SIMs to militants in and around Relan area. Two LeT sympathisers --Mohammad Younas, son of Babu Hussain, and
Abdul Rashid, son of Mir Hussain -- were apprehended from their residences at Pangali near Shahadra Sharief in Rajouri.
Both of them were alleged to be active for the past several years and had been providing information to LeT commanders about the movement of security forces in and around Thanamandi. They were also providing logistic support, eatables, ration,
shelter, SIM cards of different mobile companies and their recharge coupons to LeT militants.
An amount of Rs 35,000, believed to be part of hawala money meant to be given to militants, was also recovered from their possession.
