"Story of BJP is one of betrayal of Jammu", says a BJP activist
8/17/2010 11:29:09 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 17: J&K unit of the BJP, which has no specific Jammu-centric agenda and which is known for its more than cordial relations with the pro-autonomy NC, is trying to befool the people of Jammu province by enacting drama after drama. On August 14, it enacted a drama of sorts. Some activists of its youth wing started moving towards Srinagar. Earlier on the same day, they performed Puja at Tawi River to attract the attention of the media. A day earlier, the BJP's youth wing had declared that hundreds of youths would go to Srinagar on August 14 to unfurl the national flag at the Srinagar's Lal Chowk on August 15. The most striking aspect of the BJP's planning was to make things public a couple of days earlier and disclose its whole strategy so that the police could prevent the party's youth wing's activists at Manda itself from proceeding towards Srinagar. Manda is very close to the BJP's headquarters, which are located in Kachi Chowni. Everything appeared well-planned and everything worked well. A few activists reached Manda. State BJP president, along with a couple of other state-level office-bearers, also reached there to make speeches on the occasion of the march towards Srinagar - march that was not to take place. They also knew it that the police will not allow the BJP activists to proceed towards Srinagar. They were not really committed to go to Srinagar. Their objective was publicity.
The BJP had adopted a similar strategy on July three, when the RSS-BJP combine gave a call for Jammu bandh on a non-issue. The BJP activists, along with a few MLAs, started the march from the party headquarters and they were arrested outside the party headquarters. Everything was well-planned and everything worked as per the worked out strategy. The aim of the marchers was not to persuade the people to observe bandh. Their aim was to befool and hoodwink the people. The objective was to remain in the news. That the bandh call was bound to be rejected by the people of Jammu province and they rejected the call. The result was that even the shopkeepers outside the party headquarters did not observe bandh. The answer is not far to seek.
What the BJP leaders did on July three was a drama of sorts and what the party's youth wing activists did on August 15 was a drama of sorts. Those who disclose their strategy before hand and those who, according to a respectable insider, tell the "police" everything before hand cannot be taken seriously. In fact, there are elements in the administration who told this scribe on the condition of anonymity that certain elements within the BJP had already taken the administration into confidence and assured it that they would no do what they had declared to do.
Interesting it to note that even the people within the BJP are not happy with their leaders and think-tanks. They are cursing their leaders, saying that "they are making fool of themselves"; that "their actions and activities have made them a laughing stock among the general public"; and that "no one believes them." They are also saying that "they are still with the party because they cannot join another political party because of ideological reasons" and that "there are four-five persons in the party who have manipulated everything in their favour and who do not allow the sincere and committed workers to grow and play any role."
A BJP activist told this scribe on the condition of anonymity that "had the BJP been really committed to going to Srinagar to unfurling the national flag at Lal Chowk, it would not have revealed its strategy before hand." He further told that "the BJP workers could have very easily reached Srinagar as pilgrims to the Shri Amarnath without disclosing their identity." Significantly, this BJP activist cited the example of the suspended Head Constable Abdul Ahad Jan, who managed his entry into the VVIP enclosure in the Bakshi Stadium and hurled a shoe at Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. He said "if Jan could do what he had planned to do, why couldn't the BJP activists reach Srinagar and do what they had planned to do." He ended his conversation with this scribe by saying that "it was all drama aimed at befooling the people of Jammu province, who cannot be misled by the BJP any longer as it stands thoroughly exposed." His last comment was "the story of the BJP is one of betrayal of Jammu."
The BJP has to revise its strategy in order to win over the people of Jammu. It must stop enacting dramas. It should work on the ground and identify itself with the Jammu sentiment. It has to work hard.
