PM puts all speculations about autonomy to rest | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 17: Though the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh has put to rest the all speculations regarding the grant of autonomy toJ&K State in his Independence speech saying the J&K is an integral part of India and all solutions can be found under the Indian Constitution, the question making rounds everywhere is who fed this information to a section of the media that Dr Singh during the all party meeting at New Delhi recently had said that Government was ready to discuss the autonomy for the state provided there is consensus on the issue. It may be recalled that State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta and Party president, Shamsher Singh Manhas who also had participated in the said meeting categorically said that no mention of autonomy was made by Dr Singh during his meeting with the leaders of various political parties from J&K. The duo also while referring to the text of PM's speech in the meeting said that there was no mention of word autonomy in it. The BJP leaders while taking serious exception to the media reports in this regard said that if PMO has circualted any statement to the press before or after the meeting regarding the autonomy which was not totally discussed in the meeting the Party strongly condemns it. Later the BJP State Chief, Manhas also wrote a letter to PrimeMinister asking Dr Singh to clarify the stand as the statement has created a big controversy in the state. Even the BJP came to a severe criticism from its arch rivals in Jammu who accused the Party to be the B Team of NC and alleged that BJP was defending the PM to pleasse NC. However after the Prime Minister made it clear in his Independence Day speech from Red Fort that the J&K is an integral part of India and any dialogue can be held under the limits of Constitution has set the things right. This wayDr Singh also silenced those who were playing the card of autonomy for the state being the only solution to the present turmoil in the Kashmir. It may be recalled that majority of the people in J&K including the Dogras of Jammu region, Ladhakis, Gujajrs and Bakerwals, Pharis, Kashmiri Pandits and Sikhs have outrightly rejected the autonomy formulla as proposed by ruling National Conference (NC) as the only solution to vexed Kashmir issue. Besides the Kashmiri Pandits the Jammuites have also warned the Central agaisnt granting autonomy to the state by terming the proposed move as suicidal. Voicing concern over the Central Government softening stand on autonomy, the political parites of Jammu have warned that any such decision will be fraught with serious consequences. The Government can't take the majority of the people in the state for granted and thrust the will of some secessionist groups of Kashmir on the people of all three regions of the J&K, said Ram Paul chairman Dogra Liberation Front. Takaing aserious view of the happenings in Kashmir, he said the Jammu region has suffered a lot in last 63 years and the only solution to the problem would be reorganisation of the state by granting separate statehood to the region. Supporting him Kuldeep Chib, leader of Peoples Revolutionary Movement said that GoI cana't take the people of other two regions, includingJammu and Kadakh, Gujjars, Bakerwals, Paharis, Kashmiri Pandits and Sikhs for granted and take a decision as per the will of some disgruntled leaders of Kashmir Valley. He said Jammu has suffered a lot and the people of the region will not budge an inch from their demand of separate statehood to Jammu. |
