Balwant Thakur to head National panel of experts

Jammu Aug 18: Natrang Director, Balwant Thakur is to head the National panel of experts on the performing arts traditions of India.
Nominated by Department of Culture, Government of India, the panel of experts is going to meet in Nagpur, (Maharashtra) from 20 to 23rd of August, 2010 at the South West Zonal Cultural Centre.
Balwant Thakur is the first expert from North India who has been assigned to assess the present nature of the performing arts traditions of India and to recommend to the Government of India the future course of action for their preservation, promotion and propagation.
This National body of experts which comprises of eminent exponents of music, dance, theatre, puppetry, martial arts and oral traditions will deliberate in detail on the current promotional programmes and the role of various departments and institutions who have the mandate and on whom the responsibility of patronizing and promoting the priceless heritage of our country.
Elaborating about his new role of responsibility, Natrang Director Balwant Thakur said that this opportunity will enable him to contribute his services for a larger cause of the culture of India. “We are the richest nations of the world and we should be proud of having in possession the rarest performing arts traditions of the world. But unfortunately nothing much has been done to preserve our priceless performing arts heritage. Majority of Indians are not aware about their belongings and have even failed to capitalize on their cultural strengths. We are a Nation which has the living history of 5000 years of its performing arts and this is what makes it a unique country in the world. Our responsibility will be to give a new fillip to the traditional arts and artists of our country and will recommend to the government to have a specific defined cultural policy to save the dying arts traditions of India,” said Balwant Thakur.
Balwant Thakur’s is the recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for direction in theatre. Decorated with over one hundred National and International honors, Balwant Thakur is the emerging International face of Indian Theatre. Balwant Thakur has presented his presentations in London, Oxford, Brighton, Denmark, Bangkok, Dubai, Sharjah, Berlin, Frankfurt Moscow, Rome, Yugoslav, Belgrade Singapore, Malaysia, Stratford and Dhaka. He also worked as Secretary, J & K Academy of Art, Culture & Languages from 1995 to 2003.
He also served on the Board of prestigious institutions like, Indian Council for Cultural Relations, National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama, New Delhi (1995-99, 1999-2003 & 2009-2014) and North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala (1995-2003), and also as an expert for Department of Culture (M.P.) Department of Language and Culture, Himachal Pradesh and National School of Drama, New Delhi.
