CM sounds clear on ASFPA not to be revoked at present | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 18: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday made it clear that there is no question of revoking Armed Forces Special Powers Act at this point of time. Responding to a question on the need to amend the law to restore confidence among the Kashmiri population, Omar said, “We are in the process of examining if there is any possibility of revoking the AFSPA from certain areas where militancy is the thing of the past and secondly modifying the existing law by dropping the more draconian components and making it slightly humane”. He said this is on going discussion and government is pursuing both the tracks with New Delhi . On the issue of considering proposal of Autonomy Omar said, “There is no question of amending the Autonomy resolution passed by the J&K Assembly". He said we are not taking extreme position on the issue. Autonomy is just a starting point of our dialogue to find a common meeting ground which is acceptable to all the stake holders. He expressed hope that the ongoing cycle of violence would soon come to an end. “I have given strict and clear instructions to the security forces to exercise maximum restrain while dealing with the protesters on the streets in Kashmir valley.
