Clean sweep by Jammu in U-19 handball | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 18: After lifting the girls’ title yesterday, Jammu district clinched the boys’ trophy today in inter-district divisional level (Under-19) handball tournament, organised by Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) at Shastri Nagar grounds, here. In the boys’ final, played today, Jammu defeated district Rajouri by a margin of 12 points in a one-sided contest with final score on board read 14-2. Jammu boys dominated the proceedings throughout thereby sparing little chance for the visiting Rajouri district to strike at the net. Since guard at the net plays an important role in the attacking game of handball, it was because of poor goal-keeping from Rajouri that caused the team’s debacle. On the other hand, Jammu district had an experienced boy guarding the net. From Jammu district, Sumit, Pankaj and Dildar Singh contributed three goals each. Gourav was only scorer from Rajouri, who made both the goals for the team. Medical Officer Jammu, Mrs Wazir was special guest in the prize distribution function, who gave away winners and runners-up trophies. Deputy Director DYSS, S S Bali was among other distinguished guests present in the valedictory function. He informed that the winners of the divisional level competition would compete with their counterparts from Kashmir division before their participation at the National School Games, organised every year by the National School Games Federation of India (NSGFI). Just a formality The two-day handball competition in under-19 category turned out to be just a formality on part of the DYSS. Only two teams turned up in the girl section and the organisers hardly took pain to make it a league competition so as to extend an opportunity to the players to exhibit their talent. Furthermore, the boys competition, wherein seven out of the 10 districts turned-up for participation in this divisional level meet, again made knock-out. “In a single match, a team cannot prove its worth, there should be a league-cum-knock out competition so as to provide the players ample of opportunities to perform,” pleading not to be quoted, a senior handball coach expressing his concern. Interestingly, instead of making it a full day activity, which otherwise was spread over two days, the organizers spend just two-three hours in the ground and seem in hurry to pack-up as early as possible. “It is very unfortunate that most of the senior officers in DYSS hardly know the technicalities and just hold the events to complete the annual ritual,” maintained the coach.
