Mendher residents throng Highway against Police
Demand immediate release of arrested persons on Aug 6

Rajouri, Aug 18: Alleging unnecessary harassment by local police with the residents of Bhata Dunia area, locals today blocked Jammu-Poonch Highway and demanded immediate release of three person arrested by the police following August 6 encounter.
Following public pressure, police has reportedly released all the three locals.
As per reports, residents of Bhata Dhunia area of Mendher today hold protest demonstration on the Jammu-Poonch highway in the area and shouted anti-police slogans.
Due to dharna on the main road, traffic on the Highway remained disrupted for hours whereas Yatries on way from Jammu to Budha Amarnath Mandir were also stranded for hours in the area.
Sources said that following Sangyote encounter on August 6 when an follower Ruksar Mirza was killed, police had picked up three local persons for questioning. However when did not returned the home after 10 days, the locals throng Highway and hold protest demonstration. They said that police is unnecessarily harassing locals and those who have been picked by the police have no connection with militancy.
Police had picked up Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Rashid and Mohammad Jameel all sons of Mohammad Hussain and they were blamed of giving shelter to the militants.
However when they did not report back their houses, locals approached police and demanded to release them. “We approached Gursai Police Station to release these locals as they have no links with the militants neither they have ever been involved in any militancy related case. However police did not respond and told us that they have not arrested any person”, a protestor said adding that when they came to know that these locals are in the ‘illegal’ custody of police, they decided to come on roads and hold demonstration. “When we feel that locals are being unnecessarily harassed, we decided to hold protest demonstration”, a local and former cop of CRPF said. He added that if the locals are not released till evening they will continue their protest on Thursday. “We will not tolerate unnecessarily harassment of police”, he added.
Former CRPF cop also alleged that Zubair Mirza, the SPO who was killed in the encounter on August 6 have created various questions. “We doubt who killed this SPO as he was neither in uniform nor having any weapon with him during the encounter”, Gulzar Ahmed said adding that there is need of judicial probe in the encounter as they doubt that the SPO is not killed in the encounter.
Following deteriorating situation in the area, sources said that Senior Superintendent of Police has reportedly issued direction to the Station House Officer Gursai to sort out the matter in the area.
Sources said that following public pressure, police has released the arrested residents. However when contacted Station House Officer of Gursai Poliec Station Maroof Badana when contacted refuted to comment on the issue saying “I am on leave since the encounter and on that particular day I was in Court so I cannot give you any detail”. Maroof Badana advised to talk his 2IC Mohammad Shamim but when contacted he said “I cannot speak, My SHO is there in the police station and he is authorized to talk”, he said contradicting SHO’s statement of on leave for the last many days.
