Jan pardoned, fate of 15 suspended police officials still hangs in balance | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 18: Even after Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, pardoned Abdul Ahad Jan,who had hurled a shoe on him during the Independence day celebrations in Srinagar on Sunday and directed the police to withdraw all cases against him, the fate of the 15 police officials, including four officers, who were suspended on charge of security lapse, continue to hang in the balance. These 15 police officials were suspended as their security lapse had allowed Abdul Ahad Jan, a suspended police official, to sneak into the Bakshi stadium and occupy a seat in the VIP enclosure. This enclosure is reserved for ministers, legislators and senior bureaucrats. The police department has instituted an inquiry committee, headed by DIG Kashmir, to probe into the charges of security lapse leveled against the 15 police officials. Rumours were agog in the police circles that as Omar Abdullah pardoned Jan; the CM would also order withdrawing of suspension order served against the 15 police officials. When a senior police officer was asked that after withdrawing all charges against Abdul Ahad Jan, whether the administration was contemplating to drop the inquiry against 15 police officials and order their reinstatement, he denied about any such exercise being on the cards. The police officer said, "Under rules, the DIG Kashmir is supposed to complete the investigation and submit the report to the Government shortly." He also informed that since Chief Minister himself is the in-charge of Home also and hence it was within his powers to order reinstatement of the 15 police officials. He said under rules the probe has to be completed in order to ascertain what went wrong and how did it happen. It has to be verified whether some of the 15 police officials suspended had conspired and allowed safe entry to Abdul Ahad and facilitated him in occupying a seat in the VIP enclosure. The police officer explained that if the committee found there was no security lapse all the 15 police officials would be reinstated. In reply to a question he said that even after Abdul Ahad was pardoned by the Chief Minister, the Government has to examine the nature of the security lapse and identify persons or agencies responsible for it so that such lapses were not repeated in future. Meanwhile the police have decided to strengthen its media cell so that there was a better rapport between the police and the men of the fourth estate. In this connection the police publicity wing has been kept under the overall supervision of one IGP. The IGP would be responsible for feeding newsmen and those working for electronic news channels with information regarding to the day to day events and incidents.
