15 Armymen missing, 20 killed in Leh floods

NEW DELHI, Aug 18: The Army has lost 20 soldiers, including three Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) in the recent flash-flood that hit Leh and its nearby areas in Ladakh and 15 Army personnel are still missing. This has been stated in a Ministry of Defence statement issued here today.
Despite this, the Armed Forces are continuing with rescue and relief operations in flash flood-hit Leh-Ladakh. The IAF flew two IL-76 transport aircraft and three Cheetah Helicopters, airlifting 7.35 tons relief materials on Tuesday. And thus far the Air Force has airlifted over 355 tons of relief material and equipment and flying 822 passengers in 237 sorties.
Besides the IAF efforts, 19 columns of the Army continue to render rescue and relief operations on the ground. As many as 150 Civilians have been provided meals at the Government Degree College, Leh while 370 others were provided meals at Choglamsar Relief Camp. As part of its effort to improve connectivity, Border Roads Organisation has launched one more bridge at Hunuthang.
Meanwhile, through another statement the Ministry said that Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development Dr VK Saraswat would visit the flood affected areas of Leh as well as Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR), the DRDO lab in Leh, tomorrow (Thursday). During his day-long visit, he would meet scientists and staff of DIHAR which was severely affected during the recent cloudburst and the floods. He would also visit the DRDO relief camp and meet victims of this natural calamity.
Earlier, on receipt of the information about the flash floods, Dr Saraswat had formed a high level team headed by Dr W Selvamurthy, DS & CC R&D (LS) for organising relief operations in Leh.
Medical supplies including essential medicines, water potability detection kit, water purification tablets, food materials, blankets, bed sheets, sweaters and other items were rushed to Leh for providing succour to victims of natural calamity.
