Let separatists show mercy on student community | | | While traders, transporters, hoteliers and houseboat owners bemoan losses they have been facing during the last over 68 days because of shutdowns and curfew restrictions in the Kashmir valley many others are highly worried over the continued closure of the educational institutions, right from schools,to colleges and to the university. The biggest worry is among those who are to appear in examinations conducted by the CBSE,state Board and the University within next three to four months.Well Asiya Andrabi,Chief of Dukhtarn-i-Millat(daughters of faith) has advised the student community to study in their homes and stop going to the educational institutions. If it can happen the Government should order closure of all educational institutions, including the university.Asiya Andrabi is an educated woman and as such she should know that is it possible for kids of the science stream to learn practical lessons all by themselves and that too in the less cosy rooms of their houses. She should know that if the university too is shut which institution will issue certificates to those candidates who will pass in the examination.Which institute or body will conduct the examinations?Forcing students, belonging to various levels,to give up their studies has been tried in Afghanistan in oder to have large number of youths available for arms training. And over the years the prominent citizens in Afghanistan and the political elite have realised the gravity of the loss.Efforts are being made to make up the loss and one may not feel surprised if one sees students from Afghanistan studying in various educational institutions in several countries, including India. Keeping students away from the schools had been tried by the Pakistan aided militants in 1989-92 by setting on fire number of school and college buildings. The militants resorted to violence leading to shutdowns and curfew restrictions during this period with the result the affluent class in the valley besides political leaders, including separatists, sent their children to educational inst itutions in various Indian states. And those who had means were able to send their children to educational institutions in foreign countries. It was loss for the Kashmiris and gain for the states and the countries where these Kashmiri students got admission. And besides the economic loss a new race of illiterates emerged in Kashmir.Interestingly the woman who has been pleading for total shutdown to educational institutions in Kashmir has had plan of sending her son for higher education to Malyasia. Why only Malaysia and not any other developed country ?She had selected Malaysia because it being a muslim country where a ward of a Kashmiri separatists and fundamentalist woman could be safe.Reports said that a large number of parents of students have been persuading separatists to suspend their calls for shutdowns and marches failing which the career of their wards was in jeopardy. They have pleaded with the sparatists to stop playing with the future and the destinies of their children. And these very sparatists are highly learned.See Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Prof.Abdul Gani Bhat and both had excelled as teachers and professors.Molvi Umar farooq has been still perusing higher courses. However, there is no response from the separatists because they believe that forcing closure of the educational institutions azadi will not be a distant dream.Unfortunately these separatists have tried to equate teaching and learning with the acivities connected with the sectors of trade, transport and tourism. One can make up for the losses that traders, hoteliers and transporters suffer but loss in academic activities cannot be compensated either by the Government or by any other agency.Hence the need of the hour is to prevent the sparatists from allowing Kashmir to have a generation of illiterate, ignorant and rash youth. |
