Taj tours Akhnoor, takes stock of losses due to recent floods | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 19: Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Taj Mohi-ud-Din today conducted an extensive tour of the flood affected areas of Akhnoor and Khour block and took stock of the losses due to heavy rains and flash floods there. Taj inspected ongoing flood protection works at village Dhatyal, Pangali, Indri Patan, Bandu wala, Setriwala, Mera, Thangri Patan, Chanjama and Sangrampur. He directed the concerned engineers of Flood Control Department to speed up the pace of work by increasing the bund height to save the agriculture land. He was informed that when the Chenab water gauge rises up to 37.5, some agriculture land, protection band and crates get washed away in some of the areas. Taj also interacted with the affected people and directed the concerned officers to assess the losses to the agriculture land and recommend their cases for assistance under various scheme. Minister said that technical experts will be roped in to chalk out viable measures to deal with the floods in river Chenab and minimize the loss to life and property due to change of course of the river during the rainy season. He, however cautioned the people to not to penetrate deep to the river sides as there is every apprehension of flash floods in the days to follow. Earlier, Minister also inspected the ongoing restoration work of damaged portion of wall of Ranbir Canal near Domana and instructed the concerned engineers to speed up the restoration work. Taj exhorted the officers and engineers to redouble their efforts to ensure quality and timely completion of all ongoing protection works in the flood prone areas.
