8/21/2010 10:17:15 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 21: Ever since the traffic police have erected ‘nakas’ at several places in and around winter capital of the state to check the routine violations of traffic rules by habitual offenders, the vehicle operators have started to adopt ways and means to avoid getting trapped from alert men in blue.
Interestingly instead of abiding the laws, the vehicle owners particularly mini bus operators have evolved a modus operandi to escape the vigil eyes of traffic cops as
they just bye pass these ‘nakas’ by taking other than the prescribed routes causing problems for the commuters on in various parts of the city.
Astonishingly, these matador operators after ensuring safety from ‘challan’ or being penalized again over load the bus.
Traffic scenario in the winter capital is in awful condition as the bus drivers are violating rules with impunity as per their wish at the cost of innocent souls.
This issue was time and again was highlighted by Early Times which resulted into ‘nakas’ in some areas of Jammu province but this action didn’t pay the desired results thanks largely to the tricks played by the ‘clever’ drivers.
Sources said that today traffic police heavily placed ‘nakas’ in different areas of Satwari, Kunjwani and they charged fine from over loaded matadors.
Naveen Sharma, a commuter said that many a times the inexperienced teenage conductors drive the vehicles. Always there were chances of any mishap. He maintained that operators charge fare not according to authorized fare list but as their wish.
He stated that the law enforcing authorities of the state government should strictly enforce the traffic laws to save the lives. He also said that government should ensure that the mini bus and other passenger vehicle operators should be well trained and tested properly before issuing them licenses.
Further they stated that the traffic department should also evolve means with the cooperation of the vehicles operators. And it should also help in the suffering the mitigations of the commuters not in increase of the sufferings.
When contacted SSP Traffic Jammu Zahid Manhas for his version, he said that these nakas are installed for streamlining the traffic flow in the winter capital, some nakas are mobile while some were permanently installed.
