DSP among 10 injured as students clash with police at Thanamandi | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT RAJOURI, Aug 21: Over the trivial issue of starting a special bus service for them from Manyal Gali and Mehrote to the government degree college at Thanamandi here, students today clashed with police, resulting in injuries to at least 10 persons, including a deputy superintendent of police (DSP). While students stoned the cops, the latter resorted to lathicharge to disperse them. Five cops, including DSP Ashok Kumar, and an equal number of students were wounded in the clash, police sources said. Demanding a special bus service for them from Manyal Gali and Mehrote, students of the Thanamandi degree college boycotted their classes in the morning and took out a procession. They said they were forced to boycot their classes as the authorities concerned had failed to do the needful even after a month of the submission of a memorandum to them in this regard. They said they required a special bus service because they were being harassed by the minibus operators. The matter was, however, sorted out with the intervention of DSP Ashok, but some "miscreants" again took out a procession, raising slogans against police and district administration. The DSP then had a meeting with the college principal in which 15 students and some booking agents for buses were also present. Sources said the agents assured that they would keep two buses exclusively for the students of Manyal Gali and two for those of Mahrote. The students agreed to it and called off their strike, the sources added. Sources said even after the issue was settled, some students started pelting stones on the police party, resulting in injuries to the DSP and four others. The cops then lathicharged them as a result of which five students sustained injuries. The injured students were admitted to the sub-district hospital, Mendhar, from where Mohammad Qadir and Zahoor Ahmad were referred to the Rajouri district hospital following deterioration in their condition. Sources said the agitated students also snatched the weapons of four cops, but these were returned on the intervention of locals. The DSP's official vehicle was also damaged in the stone pelting, the sources added. DSP Ashok said though students' demand, which was genuine, had been met, some students unnecessarily resorted to stone pelting. College principal, Dr Satinder Singh said he had written to deputy commissioner and tehsildar about 20 days ago and requested them to start special bus service for the students of Manyal Gali and Mehrote. |
