Raksha Bandhan: Hectic activity in city | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 22: The festival of Raksha Bandhan is celebrated to strengthen the bond of affection between brothers and sisters. The city these days is abuzz with hectic shopping activity ahead of the festival. With the festival of Raksha Bandhan right in the corner, markets have been flooded with the 'threads of love,' popularly called rakhis. And women are thronging shops here to choose the 'best ones' for their dear brothers. Among the numerous ones, the variety which is winning hearts of almost all is the thread-shape rakhis. The reason: Such sorts of rakhis, besides looking elegant and sober, are easy to post to brothers living at other places. “My brother stays in Delhi and every year I buy a thread-shaped rakhi as it is easier to post. In earlier times heavy rakhis were in but now, with 'light' being in trend, even rakhis are not exception," said Puja Gupta, a BA-I student of a local college. Most of the shops have been decorated with colourful rakhis made up of silk and cotton thread. The shops are also dotted with numerous gift items. Most of the people are purchasing chocolates, photo frames, crystals and soft toys for giving gifts to their brothers or sisters. Like every year, different cartoon characters can be seen on rakhis for children. The sale of such kind rakhis always remains high, as children are fond of cartoons. Spiderman and pokimon are more in demand as compared to other cartoon characters. Rakhis depicting pictures of gods and goddess are also available. Those with religious bent of mind are purchasing these rakhis. Rakhis are available in the market at a price ranging between Rs 5 and Rs 500. Mumbai-made bracelet-type rakhi with heavy stones, which costs Rs 500, is available only at branded stores and is also witnessing a good sale. Other popular types of rakhis include gold-plated ones costing from Rs 150 to Rs 300; silver-plated rakhis costing Rs 100 to Rs 200 and stonish/Korean rakhis are also available at Rs 200 to Rs 500. Rakhi “thalies” are also available in the market at Rs 125 to Rs 700. The ubiquitous plain thread or even the shiny variety in silk is passe. If marketing whizkids are to be believed, it is nothing less than a gleaming silver ‘rakhi’ for the brothers this Raksha Bandhan. With rakhis in precious metal like gold, silver and even platinum, the market is flooded with rakhis with a price tag ranging from a couple of hundred bucks to a fancy price. What’s more, these rakhis can also be made to order. Take for instance the ‘Wrist Post’, launched by Frazer and Haws, this one allows you to let unleash your creativity and pen down a few words for brother dear, which will then be engraved on a “clean sheet held on both sides with coloured leather cords”. And all this for Rs 295. For those willing to spend a little more, there are the ‘Rings of Fortune’, a range “meant to ward off the evil”. This rakhi can also be converted into a pendant, which can later be flashed as a fashion accessory. Apart from silver rakhis, customers are also being wooed with specially designed silver articles like photo frames, pen stands and piggy banks to give on the auspicious occasion.
