Rehabilitation work in full swing but fears haunt survivors | Life in Leh after 15 days | | M.Ramzan Khan Early Times Report Leh 22 August. Its been more than fifteen days the devastating flash flood hit the leh region. The recent floods which were triggered by cloud burst have been described as the most devastating disaster that Leh region has ever witnessed. The psychological impact of the flood is such that even today the people are not able to sleep well for the whole night. A single sound of thunder or a sign of lightening make every one sleepless in the region even after a fortnight. On the other hand the good thing is that the local and other organizations are at their bit to bring back the life of Leh on normal track but the haunting memories are hard to ignore. On visiting a relief camp at Choglamsar, which was badly affected by the flash flood, I met an old man named Tsering Tundup resident of Choglamsar presently putting up in a makeshift camp at choglamsar. Tsering Tundup said that in his whole life he has not witnessed such a devastation. Even in the camp people do not feel safe as they fear clouds can be burst anywhere again, said the 82 yrs old Tundup. In most of the region people used to stay on mountains particularly during night. But they are so terrified nowthat they spend the whole night with out sleep. They always keep vigil on weather and alarm each other on hearing a single sound of thunder or seeing a lightening. They are even now not ready to come down to their homes. On asking whether they feel safe on the mountain, a woman said , "it is a matter of mental satisfaction which brought us here .......otherwise we also know that no place is cent percent safe........ We are also not happy to stay away from our homes but it is our compulsion", she added. Earlier the Leh bazaar used to open till midnight but it is not so now. All the shopkeepers closes their shops by 7 pm. It is hard to believe that these market which were buzzing with actvity only a fortnight back look deserted after 7pm. Even during day times people come out with mouth mask to protect themselves from dust and possible epidemic. It is true the bad time is over but the impact is still deep and alive in the minds of people. Relief works are going on well but this has also failed to mitigate the mental agony of the survivors of the tragedy. Every thing can be restored very quickly but it appears hard to remove the fears and apprehensions in the minds of people so soon. Abdul Mehraj, President of Choglamsar village said that unless and until the authorities build a permanent and safe drainage system. people of Leh will face such disasters in future as well. The authorities now should act swiftly and clear all the flood prone areas .Also they should not permit to construct buildings near flood prone areas and around the streams. All these steps are very necessary to esnure saftey of people, said Mehraj. It is now for the authorities to restore confindence among people in the region so that they could live a peaceful and safe life ahead.
