Leaders of mainstream parties showing indifference in defusing tension in Valley
8/22/2010 11:47:57 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 22: With Kashmir burning for over two months now the role of mainstream political parties has come to a sharp criticism from cross section of people in the state for their negative role and maintaining a stoic silence on the issue.
The deteriorating situation in the Valley coupled with the negative role played by the main stream political parties in Kashmir has perturbed the nationalist forces in the state as well as rest of the country.
According to sources there is a general feeling among the people that leaders of mainstream political parties as well as civil society of Kashmir could have played a significant role in defusing the crisis and in restoration of normalcy in the Valley.
Having their cadres in tact, the National Conference (NC), Congress and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have maintained total silence on the lawlessness in the Valley which is facing the crisis for over two months now crippling the normal life completely.
The sources said the negative role played by the leadership of these political parties has been a cause of concern for the nationalist forces in the country who are of the opinion that had the mainstream political activists taken on the separatists and anti national elements by mobilizing the public opinion against them right from the day when stone pelting started in Valley, neither the innocent lives would have been lost nor the situation would have been gone out of control as has happened at present.
The sources said while the PDP being the main Opposition party wants to put the Omar Abdullah led coalition Government on mat, the role of the ruling NC and Congress parties is also dismal so far as defusing the present crisis in the Valley is concerned.
The sources said with the simmering differences in National Conference leadership over the sidelining of senior party functionaries by Omar Abdullah, the senior party leaders feel demoralized and they have chosen to stay indoors instead of campaigning against the separatists and Hurriyat leadership.
The sources said that senior Partymen who had worked shoulder to shoulder with Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah's plebiscite movement are today feeling most dejected as the new leadership has sidelined them in all matters.
These leaders and their supporters are watching the situation as the mute spectators instead of trying to restore the peace and normalcy in the trouble-torn Valley, sources added.
Sources said last year during a public meeting at Yorekhosipora in Devsar Constituency of Kulgam district in South Kashmir when a senior NC leader and former minister stood up to address the rally, he was so humiliated by the Chief Minister who reportedly said ``now the time of senior men is over and it is the turn of juniors''. The former Minister who was associated with NC since 1947 has taken the strong exception to these utterances and he had expressed his strong resentment before the party president who later pacified him, the sources added.
Same has been case with other senior leaders of the party and former legislators. The leadership has also sidelined one of the former Party Legislator who had performed a remarkable role and kept up the party flag during the peak of militancy by facing all odds and terrorist threats now. Even he was not considered for mandate during the last Assembly elections though he had won the two consecutive elections from Srinagar city.
The sources said that same has been the role of Congress leadership and the Party chief who is also from Kashmir valley is issuing statements from Union Capital instead of visiting Valley and working amidst masses.
The sources said it is due to the negative role played by these leaders that Kashmir is burning at present and no one tries to put off the fire. The lack of will on the part of the leaders has made all the difference, otherwise in the last Assembly and Parliamentary elections there was about 60 percent voter turnout in Valley and the majority of the people cast their vote to strengthen national unity and integrity by rejecting the protagonists of so called Azadi.
