EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 22: In the MBBS/BDS entrance exam impersonation case in which his daughter Huma Tabassum is held an accused, works minister GM Saroori, who is supposed to be a torchbearer, has undoubtedly landed in trouble and may have to quit.
Another politician, who has got into trouble, is NC leader and former minister Rampal whose son Lovish Bharat has too been held an accused in the racket.
Both Saroori and Rampal were alleged to have facilitated the impersonation for their minor wards, who otherwise would not have dared to take such a step.
Seven outsiders were found impersonating Tabassum, Lovish and five other candidates of "influential" families, including Areeshi Kiran, daughter of Ajeet Kumar of Roopnagar, Takshay of Shivam Enclave (New Delhi), Sneh of Greater Kailash (New Delhi), Mohammad Sadiq of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh and Rajiv Kumar of Bihar.
While Shruti Gour took the test for Tabassum, Mobeen Akhtar appeared for Lovish.
Five other impersonators held from the examination centre included Sheetal Gupta (a first year student at Sagar Medical College, Bhopal) of Bhopal, Lalit Kumar of Bihar, Satyendra Singh of Patna, Om Prakash of Rajasthan, Mubeen Akhtar of Lucknow, Jabbar Singh of Rajasthan and Shruti Gaur of Khoo Wali Gali, Mathura.
All of them were booked under sections 419 and 420 of RPC and 2/25 of Prevention of Unfair Means Act.
While all the fake examinees were cooling their feet in police lockup, police had not bothered to even question the candidates, or the beneficiaries, for whom they appeared in the test.
This is otherwise not done by police as such cases are taken on priority for investigation.
Meanwhile, the arrested impersonators were today produced before an executive magistrate, who remanded them to nine days police custody.
When contacted, Rampal said, "We are trying to find out what exactly has happened." He said he came to know from the today's newspapers that someone else had impersonated his son in the MBBS/BDS entrance test.
Asked if police had contacted him to question his son, Rampal replied in the negative. Saroori could not be contacted despite repeated attempts as his cellphone was in "switched off" mode.
During preliminary investigation, police came to know that each candidate had allegedly paid Rs one lakh through his parents to agents -- Kunj Bihari and Sheetal -- who had hired impersonators for Rs 50,000 each, a police officer said.
He said the candidates' parents were likely to be booked under section 120-B of RPC if it was proved that payment to the agents was made by them.
The officer said the beneficiaries were booked because without their tacit consent it would not have been possible for the fake examinees to take the test on their behalf.
The parents could not be directly involved because it was yet to be found if the payment was made to the agents through them, he added.
The officer, however, felt that the parents' involvement seemed to be there as their wards must have taken the money from them. "It is unthinkable that a minor can take Rs one lakh from home without the knowledge of parents," he pointed out.
A senior lawyer said if Saroori was found to have facilitated the impersonation for his daughter, he too was likely to be booked under section 120-B. Under such circumstances, he would have to quit, he asserted.
Having risen very fast up the political ladder due to the blessings of Ghulam Nabi Azad, Saroori's reputation as an "upright" politician is now at stake.
MLAs, or ministers are not above all morals and norms. They too need to justify their acts at least to the people who elect them.
The officer said the statements of the beneficiaries would most probably be recorded tomorrow.
Efforts were also being made to trace the whereabouts of Kunj Bihari and Sheetal, he added.
Official sources said chief minister Omar Abdullah too had taken the issue very seriously.
