Early Times Report
Jammu, August 23: Preliminary survey carried out by the state agencies has revealed that loss to the crops in the Kandi belt in the Kashmir valley, owing to the prolonged weather vagaries, has been to the extent of about 100 per cent.
Stating this Minister for Agriculture, GH Mir, said that this loss to maize and paddy crops in the Kandi beltt in the valley has been the result of latest sowing. In reply to a question Mir said that the survey about the loss to crops in the Jammu region was under progress.
He said initial reports said that in the Kandi belt of the Jammu region the loss on account of drought could be over 60 per cent.
Mir seemed to be worried over the fate of the paddy crops in the state.
He said that the present rainy season may delay paddy maturing in the Kashmir valley.
The Minister said that if there was delay in the maturing of paddy crops in the valley because of intermittent of rain the damage to the paddy crop in the plains too could be heavy in case some parts of the valley witnessed early snow or incessant rain.
Mir said that the good monsoon in the Jammu region could be beneficial for the kharif crops but in case the monsoon season got prolonged it could affect the produce.
He said it is to be seen whether threat of floods in Jehlum in Kashmir and Chenab and Tawai in Jammu could cause further damage to the crops.
The Minister said that nature continues to be unfair to the farmers in the state.
"Whatever good work the Department of Agriculture had been doing for the betterment of the farming community may get washed away because of the weather vagaries.
Asked about the steps the Government planned to provide relief and compensation to those farmers whose crops were damaged owing to either floods or on account of drought Mir said that the issue would be finalised after the state agencies completed survey of the total loss.
He made it clear that wherever the loss was over 50 per cent farmers would be provided compensation under the national natural calamity fund.
Mir exhorted farmers in the state to get their crops covered under the recently introduced crop insurance scheme.
He said those farmers whose crops have been damaged and have accepted crop insurance scheme have not to wait for he Government to complete the survey.
The survey on their losses would bee done by the insurance company surveyors and the losses would be compensated.
