Govt approves Rs 2 crore each for Kashmir, Jammu for flood relief: Bhalla

JAMMU, Aug 23
Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation, Raman Bhalla has said that coalition Government has approved Rs 2 crore each for Kashmir and Jammu regions to extend relief to those affected by floods and torrential rains.
Minister said that instructions have been issued to district Development Commissioners for assessing the losses in their respective districts and submit the report to Divisional Commissioners so that the relief could be disbursed among the affected lot.
Minister was interacting with locals after distributing cheques worth Rs 4.85 lakh among IAY beneficiaries of old Satwari.
Bhalla said that the government was committed to provide all help to the people affected by the flash floods and heavy rains. He said that Urban Environmental Engineering Department (UEED) has taken up repairing of damaged portion of embankments of various nallahs on war footing.
He said that the government has also taken some short and long term measures to prevent the damage to the public property due to rains and flood waters. He asked the R&B authorities to immediately remove the debris from the choked portion of the Landoi Choi nallah and start the restoration work of the damaged crates to avoid any harm to the public property.
Minister asked the people to desist from encroaching upon embankments of nallahs and streams adding that those who have already occupied land along such channels should vacate the land voluntarily, otherwise the UEED and JMC authorities will resort to forcible eviction permissible under law. .
Later, the Minister visited Press Morh in Bahu Fort and distributed relief cheques worth Rs 7 lakh under National Calamity Relief Fund to those whose households were washed away due to flash floods in nallah by conducting public darbar.
Bhalla also handed over cheques of Rs 1 lakh under NCRF as financial assistance to one Veena Devi of Kalika Colony in Bahu Fort whose husband was washed away in a local nallah in 2009.
