Opposition fury to dominate 10 day tentative calender | Autumn session of Assembly from Sept last week | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 23: Even as the situation in Kashmir is showing no signs of complete normalcy, the Autumn session of Legislative Assembly is being convened in last week of September or first week of October in Srinagar. The notification of the session will be issued shortly. Sources said though priority of the Omar Abdullah led coalition government in J&K at present is to control situation and restore normal life in Valley crippled for over two months now, but it cannot afford to delay convening of the session within stipulated six months time, a constitutional requirement. Sources said Law and Parliamentary ministry discussed the matter with Assembly Speaker about this mandatory step following which the government is contemplating to convene the session either from September last week or October first week. As per the constitutional requirement the government is bound to convene the Legislative session any date before October 4. The session, sources confirmed will not last more than 10 days. Since the government is well aware about prevalent situation in Kashmir Valley and the turbulent time it has been facing for over two months, for reasons apparent, the session will not be stretched too far. For now, the period which the government is contemplating is one week or at the most 10 days, depending upon the business taken up during the session. The Assembly session is going to be a stormy one in the wake of continuous killings and unabated protests of people across the valley, the issues which all political parties in opposition mainly PDP will rake up in a forceful way. The government is well aware of the fury it will face during the session from the opposition, which is why it may not last beyond 10 days, sources added. Sources also said the session will see mainly the government business, including some important bills that will be taken up for discussion. Besides, the tentative schedule also indicates one day for private members' bills and one day earmarked for private members' resolutions, apart from the normal question hour business. However, in the wake of the opposition fury, the session may also witness convening of special debates and discussions on human rights issues and other related matters as may be sought by the opposition. It is these issues will are likely to dominate the autumn session this time as opposition is all set to corner the government on all fronts. Last year, the Autum session was convened for a longer period as the government had to convene it into a full fledged Budget session during which the annual budget for the state was passed. The government, contrary to the normal practice had gone for vote on account during March last year. |
