Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 24: Even after the Director General police, Kuldeep Khoda, expressed regrets over the police lathicharge on youth Congress leaders and workers in Jammu on Monday, senior Congress leaders have demanded that those police officials who were responsible for causing injuries to youth Congress leaders including Amrinder Singh, All India General secretary, and the chief of the state youth Congress, Shoaib Lone, The Congress spokesman, Ravinder Sharma, described the incident "very unfortunate" deserving deep condemnation from the people. He was highly critical of the police action and said that if the police had any problem senior functionaries could have brought it to the notice of Congress ministers who were in Jammu adding that "we could have persuaded the youth Congress leaders to suspend their peace march.”
Sharma said that it was unfortunate that the police used brutal force against those youth congress leaders and workers who had organised the march for peace and communal amity in the state.
"The marchers were not antisocial and anti-national," Sharma added. He hinted that heads will roll in Jammu police shortly.
Asked whether the police action had the backing of the top police functionaries Sharma said neither the IGP nor the DIG were in Jammu. The police action was the result of the officers present. He even named a mention of them and said the Congress leadership has conveyed to the Chief Minister and the DGP their demand for transferring these erring officials.
Meanwhile a senior police officer said that since permission had not been given to the Youth Congress leadership for taking out a peace rally they had violated the instructions.
He said when the procession reached Shalimar chowk they were repeatedly requested to stop marching ahead but when they refused a mild cane charge was ordered and some of the rallyists were arrested and later let off.
The officer said that intelligence inputs had revealed that some anti-social elements were bent upon creating trouble in the city by throwing stones on the marchers. However, Sharma said this very information could have been conveyed to the senior Congress functionaries which the police authorities did not do. He said when the Deputy Commissioner had not raised any objection to the plan of carrying out the peace march why did the police create hurdles.
