Woman among six beaten by forest land grabbers in Rajouri

RAJOURI, Aug 24:
Six members of a family, including a woman, were beaten up by some alleged grabbers of the forest land at Dassal Jatan near here today.Official sources said a family of Dassan Jatan lodged a complaint with police and forest department as regards the encroachment of forest land by some people in the village.
However, when the alleged forest land grabbers came to know about the complaint against them, three of them, whom sources identified as Zakir Hussain, Mohammad Ramzan and Mohammad Kabir, beat up six members of a family, including Zamurat Begum.
The injured were admitted to the district hospital here. Zamurat said the encroached land was being used by them as a pasture.Sources said there were several incidents of the encroachment of forest land by people, especially in Dassan Jatan, Palma and Bathuni
areas.
Though sources said a total of 1,500 kanals of forest land had been encroached upon in forest compartment No 169 under khasra Nos 16 and 81 in Palma area of Kandi (Nagrota forest block), a forest department official said only 500 kanals of forest land was under
the illegal occupation of some people.
While three people had already constructed houses on the encroached forest land, nine others were making preparations, the sources added. Sources claimed that in Bathuni area, at least 20 people had grabbed 15 kanals of forest land in compartment Nos 40-R and 41-R allegedly in connivance with some forest officials.
A forest land grabber, said to be the kingpin, was alleged to be very close to a senior forest officer, the sources added.A piece of the forest land was allegedly sold to a retired army Captain who had further sold it to another man for Rs 3 lakh, the sources added.
Sources said preparations were also being made to encroach upon forest land in Thanamandi area where a forest hut had been dismantled by some locals.
