Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 24: The killing of two Gujjar ladies Shakeela 40 and her 19 year old daughter in NandMarg village near Dhamhal Hangipora in Kulgam district of Kashmir valley by terrorists on August 22 night has sent shock waves among the nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwals in the valley who had already apprehensions of terrorists attacks on the members of the Community.
According to the sources the members of the Gujjars and Bakerwal Community have become so scared with the attacks on them that they fare worst in future if the situation continues to deteriorate in valley.
The nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwals are of the opinion that after the minority Kashmiri Pandits and Sikhs their community will be soft targets of Jehadi forces in the valley where the writ of separatists run large. They said that after the recent outbursts of Sayeed Ali Shah Geelani against the Gujjars and Bakerwal Community anti-Gujjar forces in ongoing movement have toughned thier stand against commuinty. The community members are being suspected as Mukhbirs(informers) and agents of Government agencies as they have not supported the ongoing so called separatist movement in Kashmir said Kalu Gujjar(name changed) of Kachwan in Anantnag district of South Kashmir.
He said the Hurriyat hardliner has provoked the terrorists and Jehadi forces against the community and this is the reason that two innocent ladies were killed in Nandimarg by gun weilding terrorists. The venom spilt by Mr Geelani against the community has sown the seeds of hatred as our brethern are being looked down upon when they visit the plains for any work and are being suspected as agents. This is the main reason that poor and innocent ladies of the commuinty were killed by terrorists. Munir Khan(also name changed ) a nomadic Gujjar from Lar area of Ganderbal district said that there is nothing new in this attack "our community has become the target of terrorists since the outbreak of militancy in the valley in 1989-90 and hundreds of members of the community were killed while many others were tourtured."
He said this will not change our loyalty to India as we have rejected both Azadi and merger of Kashmir with Pakistan and stick to this stand even today." Khan said Gujjars and Bakerwals are eye soar since they were given ST status by Union Government for their economic, social and political empowerment. This has not been tolerated by the people of valley and they started a tirade against the community since then. But Gujjars and Bakerwals are now fully consious and they will not let anyone to impede on their rights, he added.
He said that Gujjars and Bakerwals are at present in great distress and Government should ensure proper security of the community living in far flung areas by deploying security forces in the remote areas inhibited by the members of the community.
Khan also damanded adequate compensation be paid besides Government job to two members of the poor Gujjar family whose two female members were killed by militants on August 22.
