Poppy straw seized at Lakhanpur | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 24: Over nine kilograms of poppy straw was seized by excise department officials at Lakhanpur toll post Monday. It was recovered from an apple-loaded truck (HR46C/3136) during routine checking of the truck at the toll post, official sources said. The apples, loaded by Fresh Fruit Agency, Sopore, were to be unloaded at shop No 17-A at Kanpur Mandi. The shop is owned by M/s Sri Sai Bharosa Fruit Company. Soon after the poppy was recovered, driver Rajinder Singh, son of Run Singh of Mukerian, Punjab, and truck owner Dalip Singh, son of Bahadur Singh of Muradpur, Punjab, were taken into custody, the sources added. The contraband which was found hidden beneath fruit boxes. Deputy excise commissioner has appreciated the alertness shown by the staffin detecting the contraband and also warned the smugglers and tax evaders to desist from indulging in illegal activities. Last week, 720 Kg Of poppy straw was seized from a vehicle and two accused persons were arrested by excise department officials at Nagri toll post. |
