According to sources, the horse cart operators have also increased their fare and the minimum rate for a distance of three to four kilometres is Rs 10 per passenger while it is Rs 15 from four kilometres to seven kilometrs more than double what the buses used to charge during the normal times. The sources said despite facing the wrath of separatists and demonstrators, the horse carts are commonly being run on various routes in Kashmir especially in the rural areas and they take commuters from one place to another. Many of them even faced the wrath of the protestors who also broke their tangas at a number of places but to keep their body and soul together these operators taking all risk dare to run the horse carts from various main towns of the city to rural areas taking the Valley back to ancient period when only horse carts were running in Kashmir for the travel of passengers from one place to another. The sources compelled by circumstances the people not only in these horse carts but gladly pay the charges which are much more higher than the bus fares. According to an eyewitness who two days back was travelling on a horse cart from Anantnag to Dayalagam which is hardly a distance of four kilometres the operator of his cart was attacked by the frenzy mob enroute and the roof of his cart was totally damaged by them. He said the poor fellow did not resist and begged pardon for himself. The passengers on the cart also alighted from it and travelled a 300 metre distance by foot. Later the cart was allowed to leave by the mob among whom the majority was youth. The tanga operator on reaching near the passengers while giving them the lift again cursed the separatist saying will Syed Ali Shah Geelani and his supporters feed his five member family. The eyewitness said that the Tanga operator who was all in fire said that he needed over one thousand rupees to get his cart repaired and who will pay him this amount. Criticising the separatists he said they have send their children abroad and outside the state for higher education and force the poor people to die on roads. He said a poor horse cart operator earns from Rs 150 to 200 a day on which besides feeding the horse and bearing the wear and tear of his cart he has to feed his family also. And how can the cart operators meet their expenses when they will remain in doors on the dictates of the separatists who have are extending the bandh calls from one week to another week. He sources said the other horse cart owners have also the same story to tell and facing all odds they have decided to run their carts.
