NABARD organizes orientation programme on farmer clubs

UDHAMPUR, Aug 25: NABARD today held an impressive orientation programme over the utility of farmer clubs here.
In a handout issued here today, it has been stated that Chief General Manager (CGM) NABARD M.L. Sukhdeve inaugurated the programme which was attended by DDM (NABARD) Manohar Lal, Director R-SETI, NGOs, Branch Managers of various banks, Officers of various line departments, and representatives of Farmers Clubs participated in the programme.
CGM, NABARD M. L. Sukhdeve gave detailed input on the concept of Farmers Clubs and the methodology to be adopted for formation and management of the same. He said that given the small size of landholdings, less irrigation facilities and other such constraints in the district, farmers clubs have a major role to play in the field of agriculture and rural development.
Sukhdeve also said that FCs are also participating in Financial Inclusion in a big way by functioning as Business Facilitators / Business Correspondents and by forming Self Help Groups / Joint Liability Groups. He also said that FCs need to be seen as new Business Product by the banks and they must be propagated as a vibrant forum for all activities pertaining to agriculture and rural development.
Sukhdeve also gave an overview of agriculture scenario in the country and highlighted the emerging challenges apart from the challenges being faced by Indian agriculture. He also explained the expectations from the FCs, bankers, concerned line departments and NGOs under the given circumstances.
He also added that NABARD has achieved the feat of formation of 54805 FCs in the country as on March 31, 2010 out of which 50 FCs are in Udhampur district. Further, NABARD has set the objective of formation of one lakh FCs by March 2012.
It may be mentioned here that NABARD reimburses the expenses towards formation, launching and maintenance of FCs by the banks and NGOs for a period of three years after which the concerned agency has to take over the FC. Manohar Lal, DDM, NABARD also guided the participants.
