JAMMU, Aug 25: Jammu and Kashmir government has conveyed to the centre that it wished to retain about 40 companies of the CRPF out of 48 that had been deployed on Amarnath yatra duty.
Official sources said that over 70 companies of the CRPF,state police,BSF,ITBP and the Army had been deployed to provide security cover to the pilgrims right from Kathua to the holy cave since July 1 when the annual yatra had begun.
Official sources said that in all 48 companies of the CR PF had been posted on various routes between Kathua and the mountain cave and the state would retain 40 companies for tackling the law and order which has been created by the protest rallies, stone pelting and the shutdown for which the call had been given by the separatists. The shutdown and the violent rallies had paralyzed normal life in the Kashmir valley.
A senior police officer said that the state government needed additional companies of the security forces following the plan of the separatists to continue with their calendar of shutdown and demonstrations. He said that once all the companies of the CRPF were sent back it would be difficult for the stat e to seek fresh deployment of additional companies of the CRPF. He said that during the last one month several companies of police and paramilitary forces had been withdrawn from Jammu region and deployed in the Kashmir valley.
He said "we need adequate forces in the Jammu region and we want all those companies of police and paramilitary forces that were pulled out of Jammu to be sent back."The police officer said that once these companies were sent back to Jammu "we may face paucity of forces for dealing with those violating cur few restrictions and indulging in acts of violence."
Several other police officers stated that the bulk of the security forces deployed in the Kashmir valley have started suffering from fatigue syndrome because they have been on their feet for 16 hours a day and hence there was need for curtailing their duty period which could be possible if additional companies of paramilitary forces were allotted to Jammu and Kashmir state. They said the paucity of security forces in the valley had become so sever e that "we had number of police and CRPF personnel who had been deployed on security duty to senior political leaders, bureaucrats and VIPs in Jammu.
Official sources said that in order to tackle the protest rallies with a firm hand the police authorities have decided to arrest as many youths as possible which alone could force the separatists to bank on peaceful protest demonstrations. They said on the basis of the experience gained during the last over two months, boys between 11 and 25 had been seen indulging in stone pelting against the security forces."We have to break the cycle and this can be done if over 2,000 teenagers were detained on charge of indulging in violence," they said.
