Woes of CRPF personnel posted in terrorist infested-Kashmir | | | RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 25: Everyone knows that situation in Kashmir is very complex. Everyone, including those in the administration, knows that the CRPF personnel have been exercising utmost restraint despite grave provocation. During the past about two months, about 1,000 CRPF personnel have received injuries, some of them very fatal. In fact, a large number of them have become physically disabled. Despite all this, the CRPF personnel have never been trigger-happy. Had they been trigger happy, hundreds of Kashmiri protestors would have been killed and injured. Hence, to blame the disciplined CRPF for what has been happening in Kashmir since 1947 is as patently wrong as it is highly immoral. You simply cannot blame them. Kashmir is with India only because of the supreme sacrifices of the Army and paramilitary personnel. A reference here to just one instance would be enough to prove the point that the CRPF personnel are exercising tremendous restraint. On August 13, the unruly mob attacked one of the small CRPF posts, located at Bomai near the militant-infested Sopore of Baramulla district. According to reports, the number of CRPF personnel who were there at this post was only 17. Two of them were "dhobi and cook." The attack on the post was massive. Thousands of protestors took part in this attack. After breaking the only wall the CRPF post had, the attackers entered the post and started damaging the "morchas" (sentry posts). The sentry had no other option left but to open fire. The result was that two attackers got killed and an equal number of them sustained injuries. But the Kashmir-based biased media, which is an integral part of the ongoing secessionist and violent movement in Kashmir, painted things in lurid colours in order to arouse popular passions in the already rather violent Valley. It was reported that 15 persons had been injured during the clash at the CRPF post, whereas the fact was that only two hooligans/rioters had received injuries. There are trustworthy reports which suggest that the state police took a serious cognizance of what happened there at the CRPF post, thus putting blame on the handful of the poor under-attack CRPF personnel. There are reasons to believe that the state police, at the behest of their political bosses, would see to it that the CRPF personnel, who opened fire in self-defence and save the post, are tried for murder. This, notwithstanding the fact that it was the mob comprising several thousand unruly elements who had attacked the post willfully with a view to destroying it and lynching those 17 CRPF personnel who were there at the post. These CRPF personnel should have been rewarded for their act of bravery, but, no, they are likely to be condemned unheard and persecuted. Their persecution would automatically mean condemnation of their superiors, which, in turn, would mean blot on their glorious career. It needs to noted that the August 13 attack on the CRPF post was not the only attack that Kashmir witnessed during the past about two months. During this period, the CRPF camps have been attacked no less than 45 times. Besides, hardcore and fully armed terrorists among those who attacked these CRPF camps have opened fire on the CRPF personnel as many as 10 times. Not only this, as many as 15 police posts of the Jammu and Kashmir police have also been attacked and burnt down by the rioters and extremists. This is the situation. Everything is reported. What who cares? The vested interests would want the poor CRPF personnel to die, instead of taking action against the terrorists, rioters and unruly protestors. They would want them only to exercise restraint and greet the terrorists and separatists with folded hands. These vested interests would make these poor CRPF personnel the scapegoats for no fault of theirs' because they would want to conciliate the trouble makers, rioters and the general public in Kashmir by telling them that those responsible for the killing of "innocent" civilians or those who have caused injuries to the "unarmed, innocent and peaceful civilians" have been booked and held responsible. It would be a crime against man and god to hold the CRPF responsible for the killing of 50-odd motivated and evil-intentioned rioters/extremists/protestors. Such an approach has all the potential of demoralizing the security forces. Why should they suffer for no fault of their own? Are they not entitled to right to life and right to defend themselves against the rioters? Why should they make supreme sacrifices if there is none to defend and protect them? Will the Union Home Minister personally intervene in the matter and defend and protect the poor CRPF personnel and their seniors? He must. It is his constitutional and moral duty to defend and protect them. Any failure on his part and on the part of the Government of India would only mean that they are on the side of the vested interests in Kashmir. Remember, such a shabby treatment can provoke the CRPF personnel to lay down their arms and quit Kashmir. And, if this at all happens, the results would be disastrous. (Concluded) |
