Jammu aspirants for MBBS, BVSc, Eng rue variation in time schedule | Competition fever calls for separate competent authorities Regional discrimination vivid and bare | | Syed Junaid Hashmi EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 26: Despite making all possible efforts to put the issue under the carpet, same controversial question is again dominating the concerns of thousands of students preparing to shape up the future of their life. Again, it is same syllabus and common competition but students from one region get 90 days for preparation and while from the other have an elaborate schedule of more than 200 days at their disposal to gear up -for the examination. When results are out there is a cry about the regional discrimination. To pacify the sentiments, government says that the students from the one region had a competitive edge over the other. It is about the common entrance examination for admission to glamorous and highly sought after courses like MBBS, BDS, BV.Sc and Engineering etc. The board examinations in Kashmir and Jammu provinces are held after a gap of nearly six months owing to climatic conditions in respective regions but entrance examination to the professional courses is held at a uniform schedule which gives students from both regions an unequal time for preparation. "Time plays the spoilsport otherwise, we are as capable as students from Valley this phrase was almost on everybody's lips whosoever this correspondent talked to. Though one may curse fate for making Jammu region a place of climatic uncertainties which in turn hampers study schedule of the students, thereby reducing their number considerably in professional courses. But at the same time, it may not go out of place here to mention that the authorities at the helm of affairs seem either ignorant or non-serious about giving a closer look to the statistics which clearly puts the students in Jammu province at a disadvantageous position. The students of the state board of both the provinces share the same syllabus but the time period given for the coverage of the same syllabus is severely criticized by the student community of Jammu province. And if one talks about the Entrance Examination held by Board of Professional Entrance Examination, then the odds very simply favor the students from Kashmir province. The session in Jammu province for 10 and 12th officially start March-April. But as a matter of fact, session means the completion of the syllabus. A difference of one month when it comes to Entrance Examination, Kashmir province gets more than seven months whereas the Jammu province gets just three months. If one has to go by the declaration of results, students of Kashmir province gets five-six months for preparation for all after the declaration of results whereas Jammu province gets less than one month for preparation after the declaration of results. Most of the times, a student has to wait for the results before deciding what to opt for. The other very important factor is that the session in Kashmir province runs through a season when the sun is neither too hot nor too cold. Whereas the students from Jammu province have a session which runs through two highs Too hot summer season and too cold winter season. Most of the senior lecturers are of the view that the variation of temperature also plays an important role in the studies of the student's of this region. Further more the ban imposed on private tuitions has forced some senior lecturers of higher secondary schools to question that if the government gives the syllabus which cannot be completed in such a grim scenario, then why the ban?. "The number of days and the requisite number of periods required clash clearly, then the option left with the students who want to prolong their career is either to join private schools or take tuition" said a senior lecturer working in a state lies in the ill-planned and unbalanced system of education' said a senior government functionary who requested not to be named. The functionary further added that those who planned the sessions seem to be working incognizance with the private coaching centers which have increased tremendously in the last fifteen years. "In Jammu province you have less than 150 working days in which you are ought to complete the syllabus and the syllabus in turn is not only lengthy but also needs to be given one more thought" lamented another intellectual. He further added that unless the government takes the system of education in Jammu province seriously, things would continue to be cluttered as they are today. Data is according to latest calendar issued by state government and is provisional.
