NC-PDP confrontation enters a new phase in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 26: A new phase of confrontation between the National Conference and the PDP has taken shape in the troubled Jammu and Kashmir after the latter blamed the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, and some of his cabinet colleagues for having indulged in corrupt practices. Senior National Conference leaders have stated that the allegations levelled by the PDP leaders against Omar and his cabinet colleagues were based on hearsay and hence baseless. They wanted the PDP leaders to have raised the alarm bells only after having confirmed the reports they have collected. Asked whether the party would sue the PDP leaders for maligning the image of Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues NC leaders said that the party was in favour of it adding that it was upto the Chief Minister to take a decision. When reminded about the National Conference plan on suing the PDP leaders senior party leader and MLA, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat said that "it is for the Government to establish whether we are wrong or right." He said "the ball is in the court of the Chief Minister." Asked whether the allegations levelled by him against Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues were based on facts Bhat said 'It is based on information we have received from reliable quarters and it is for the Chief Minister to find out whether our allegations were right or wrong." In reply to a question Bhat said "I and my party leaders are prepared to face any law suit that the Government may file against us ."He added "once the Chief Minister took legal course against us we shall not hesitate lifting the lid from many a skeletons in the Government cupboard." Asked to comment on Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather's charge that the PDP was playing a destructive role and that too at a time when the Kashmir valley was in the midst of severe turmoil Bhat said "exposing corrupt practices being committed by the Chief Minister and his cabinet colleagues is part of the constructive and not destructive politics." One senior National Conference leader, who wished to remain unidentified, said that it was a well calculated plan of the PDP to indulge in mudslinging at a time when the turmoil in Kashmir had peaked. He said over a month ago the PDP had accused some NC ministers of having deposited money in some foreign banks and the Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather had thrown an open challenge that if anyone gave documentary evidence on the charge that he (Rather) had amassed wealth in foreign banks he would quit. The NC leader said so far none had volunteered to provide documentary evidence and still the PDP leaders were asking the Chief Minister to make public the findings of the inquiry commission. The PDP allegations seem to have left no other alternative for Omar Abdullah and some of his cabinet colleagues but to expose the opposition charge either in the court or by making public exact details on the constructions of a Rs. 20 crore house on the Gupkar road and on the withdrawal of Rs. 26 crores from the Chief Minister's secret fund. The PDP leaders may lose their face if the Chief Minister convinces them that if the money was withdrawn from the secret fund on what it had been spent. And if a house was being built at a cost of Rs. 20 crores it should be revealed whether the allegation levelled by PDP was right . Let the people know the amount of money that was to be spent on the house and the source from which money had come. If the Chief Minister failed it would make things very difficult for him. |
