Gul praises Geelani, Mirwaiz! | Who are killers by the way? | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 26: Threatening the killers of innocent youth of stern action, the Chief Minister's advisor, Mubarak Gul hailed Geelani and Mirwaiz yesterday for their `efforts to restore peace'. Interestingly his Chief Minister accuses the duo of disrupting peace. He hailed Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Umer Farooq for their `positive thinking' which, according to Gul shall go a long way in restoring peace. "Both these leaders have appealed to the people to maintain peace and order. Some people say Geelani was released to restore order in Kashmir. This is not true. His release is linked to a process", he said. Gul knows about the love-hate relationship between Syed Ali Geelani and Omar Abdullah. He is also aware of the recent verbal dual between Mirwaiz and Chief Minister. SO why did he praise them? Geelani has admitted that some people met him in Cheshma Shahi prison. Geelani was assured full cooperation if he opted for peaceful protests. He was also asked to ensure an end to the hartaals (Strikes). Soon after, the ailing leader was taken to SKIMS for treatment and released. From the SKIMS he urged the people to reach Eidgah grounds next day. He also urged the government not to impose curfew. However, the government imposed curfew and a furious Geelani accused the government of backing out of its promises. A local news agency reported last week that the government had once again asked the same people (who met Geelani in prison) to approach and woo the separatist leader for obvious reasons. This can be one of the reasons for hurling praise on Geelani. Gul also made an interesting statement. He said: "The government will not spare the killers of the innocent youth." Who, according to Gul, are the killers by the way? Surprisingly nobody asked the all important question. Gul knows what sells in contemporary Kashmir. To get an audience from angry people a politician has to pursue a separatist agenda. This is exactly what Gul has been doing. He is trying to woo Geelani and the Mirwaiz. He is cursing the killers and he is talking about release of political prisoners. But, as they say, much water has flown down the Jehlum. What will Gul achieve, remains to be seen. |
