Fuel supply resumed in Jammu, to remain suspended for Kashmir | Meeting With CM | | MISHU GUPTA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 26: After a day filled with uncalled for hurdles and hassels the vehicle owners faced ,happily for the people of Jammu, Oil Tankers Owners' Association and Oil Tanker Drivers, Cleaners Association suspended their strike in Jammu region following the assurance from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who agreed to meet their leaders in Srinagar tomorrow. The Associations however, have announced that the petroleum products' supply to Kashmir valley would remain suspended till the government does not arrange foolproof security arrangements for oil tankers on highway in Kashmir. "Our leaders have unanimously decided to suspend our strike in Jammu but no supply to Kashmir Valley would be dispatched till the Chief Minister personally assures us for foolproof security arrangements in Kashmir Valley," general secretary, J&K Oil Tanker Drivers, Cleaners Association Devinder Singh said. The leader however made it categorical that the decision on restoration of supply to Kashmir would be taken after the meeting with chief minister scheduled to be held in Srinagar tomorrow . It may be mentioned that around 1560 oil tankers had stopped supply of petroleum products to various parts of the state on Wednesday following alleged assault and harassment of tanker drivers and co-drivers in Kashmir. The Association had alleged two drivers were targeted by a mob in Bijbehara on August 21 where some miscreants forcibly removed their clothes and then rubbed a wild shrub on their bodies causing them severe skin allergies. One of the officials in the govt informed that the administration had invited the representatives of Oil Tankers Associations for talks. "They were adamant that no supply will be made across the state unless and until chief minister personally assures security of drivers and cleaners of the tankers. The chief minister was informed about whole situation and he invited leaders of striking Associations for dialogue tomorrow," stated an official. He further said the Association members have 'called off' strike and assured immediate restoration of oil supply across the state. "As majority of petrol pumps had gone dry since last night, the Association members assured for immediate restoration of supply," he said, adding "Jammu city was badly affected due to strike while strike had virtually no impact in Kashmir as almost all oil depots were functioning there." He said a four-member delegation of striking oil tankers union comprising Ranjeet Singh and Devinder Singh from All J&K Oil Tanker Drivers, Cleaners Association, Anan Sharma from All J&K Oil Tankers Owner's Association and Gurvinder Singh would meet chief minister tomorrow afternoon to end the deadlock. Earlier, the supply of petroleum products to Jammu remained affected badly as almost all petrol pumps in Jammu city had gone dry. Serpentine queues of vehicles were witnessed at the petrol pumps while people were seen speeding their vehicles from one petrol pump to other for fuel. The unavailability of petrol on pumps made Jammuites to suffer a lot they alleged concerned authorities for taking this matter lightly. "The lethargic attitude of concerned authorities weaved deserted streets in Jammu," said Hardeep Singh adding that the out of stock pumps are escalating worries of Jammuites in this hot weather. |
