With Saroori‘s ouster, political circles begin debating cabinet induction | Wani or Niaz? | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 27: Within hours of Minister for Roads and Buildings being shown the door, political circles have begun churning stories about possible induction of either former Power Minister Mohammed Sharief Naz or MLA Doda Abdul Majid Wani in the council of ministers. Congress leaders maintain that if qualification, experience and the track record are taken as criterion, Niaz has better chances of getting inducted in the state cabinet. They said that Niaz was first elected to the Assembly in 1987 and was later inducted in the council of ministers as minister of state in 1989. In 2002, he was reelected to the Assembly from Bhaderwah constituency and was inducted as Power Minister. Against this powerful political background, Wani successfully contested Assembly election in 2002 from Doda constituency as an independent candidate and was inducted as Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development. He has remained an associate member of the Congress for sometime and later joined the party. He was re-elected to the Assembly in 2008 election. Political observers maintain that Since G.M.Saroori represented Doda district in the council of ministers headed by Omar Abdullah, Congress is supposed to repeat the representation in the cabinet of this most backward district of the state. Hence the choice for the Congress is limited and it is to be Wani or Niaz. Congress sources said that prior to the dismissal of Saroori from the cabinet; there were two vacancies in the council of ministers because under the constitutional provision, strength of the ministry cannot exceed 25. Omar inducted 23 faces since he took over as Chief Minister in January 2009.Under the seat sharing arrangement in the ruling coalition, out of three vacant posts in the council of ministers two are to be filled from the Congress and one from the National Conference. Political observers maintain that if a Congress MLA from Doda district is inducted in the cabinet to fill-up vacancy caused by Saroori's dismissal, the other two vacant spots would go to Congress MLA or MLC from the Kashmir valley. As far as the elected Congress legislators from the valley are concerned, two out of the three, Peerzada Mohammed Sayeed and Taj Mohiuddin are already in the cabinet. Insiders maintain that Congress may pick up former Minister Ghulam Ahmed Mir or MLC Abdul Gani Vakil for the remaining two slots. They assert that Congress high command would find it extremely difficult to choose among these two stalwarts. However, it is so far not clear whether Chief Minister Omar Abdulla will increase the size of the council of ministers or not. Congress leaders maintain that though Niaz has better chances of induction in the council of ministers but things would become clear only after the high command make some move to induct new faces.
