Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 27: Lakhs of rupees are meant for development of rural areas under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA) in Jammu and Kashmir are allegedly being misused by authorities concerned and in several cases, funds have been sanctioned and even withdrawn for various projects but the progress is both dismal and heart rendering.
Citing an example, locals in Samba pointed towards construction of road/culvert in Jallapar Mohalla costing Rs. 1.67 Lakhs in Panchayat Balatar in Sumb area of district Samba. Majority population of the locality belongs to scheduled caste community.
The work was inaugurated by MLA Samba Yashpal Kundal during the financial year 2007-08. Locals alleged that the after the work was started, it is yet to be completed since the funds allocated for the same were diverted for some other purpose by concerned authorities. They even went to the extent of saying that the concerned authorities might have misappropriated the funds.
Pertinently, affected village is just at the distance of 14 kilometers from the district headquarter Samba. Locals said that they have given representations to BDO Samba and also to the DC Samba. They said that both the officials assured that the needful would be done soon and also assured of paying visit to the area but even after passage of considerable time, no action has been taken.
It is pertinent to mention here that MGNREGA was started with a purpose of the providing employment of hundred days to the local unemployed besides accelerating development of the rural areas. A local youth Yograj Sumbria said neither the employment was given nor the work was done in the area. He also alleged that there are similar several other instances of alleged misappropriation of money.
He also demanded a thorough probe in the matter and an exemplary punishment to the culprits in the case. When contacted, Block Development Officer (BDO) Samba Nur Alam said that matter is being investigated and culprits would not be allowed to go scot free.
