EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Aug 27: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who has been passing through critical times, facing the greatest political challenge and not getting any support from his own party and bureaucracy in the real sense of the term, has on occasions more than one publicly accused Syed Ali Shah Geelani of Tehrik-e-Hurriyat and Mirmaiz Umar Farooq of All-Party Hurriyat Conference of disturbing peace in Kashmir and creating anarchical conditions, thus making things extremely difficult for the people. This, notwithstanding the fact that only recently one of his political advisors had met Geelani and told him that he was free to organize his anti-India activities, coupled with a caveat that he would not create an "awkward" situation for the government. He talked in terms quid-pro-quo.
The Chief Minister should not have asked his advisor to meet Geelani. For, by asking his advisor to meet Geelani and obtain an assurance from him that he would not do anything that had the potential of creating an "awkward" situation for the state government, the Chief Minister did lower the dignity of his office and created an impression that it was Geelani, and not he, who was in the driver's seat. That action on his part must have been taken by his adversaries in and outside the government to mean a sign of weakness. Besides, this action on his part must have annoyed some authorities in New Delhi, which wanted him to act and reach out to the people and which, instead, found the Chief Minister reaching out to Geelani, who has been issuing calendars at regular intervals and ordering his supporters to disrupt everything in Kashmir so that the poor people suffer and starve.
It was obvious that the action of the Chief Minister-in-serious-trouble would embolden those close to him to express solidarity with the likes of Geelani and hail them. It actually happened. The Chief Minister's political advisor Mubarak Gul, whose child has been caught red-handed while using unfair means to clear the law examination conducted by the University of Jammu, has not only expressed solidarity with Geelani and the Mirwaiz, but has also gone to the extent of openly hailing and commending their "efforts to restore peace" in Kashmir. Remember, he eulogized both Geelani and the Mirwaiz, who have been surviving and thriving because of their indulgence in the politics of death and destruction, only on Thursday and praised them for "their positive thinking", which, according the Chief Minister's political advisor, would help restore peace in the troubled Valley. "Both these leaders", he shamelessly said, " have appealed to the people to maintain peace and order."
Mubarak Gul has not only eulogized Geelani and Umar Farooq for what he called their "positive attitude", he has also, like Geelani, the out-on-the-limb Mirwaiz and others of his ilk, including Mehbooba Mufti of the PDP, declared in unambiguous terms that "the government will not spare the killers of the innocent youth." The meaning of what he said was more than clear. He meant action against the security personnel who are involved in anti-insurgency operations in Kashmir and who have been providing foolproof security cover to the Chief Minister, his political advisors, his ministerial colleagues and who not. Remove these security personnel and you will see that the unruly mobs lynching each one of them in no time. The likes of Gul are still alive because they are being fully protected by those whom they call the "killers of the innocent youth."
What Mubarak Gul said should not surprise anyone. He has only said what he believed in. He and the Geelanis, the Mirwaizs and others of their ilk were on the same page earlier, they continue to remain on the same page even today and they shall continue to remain on the same page in the future as well because they belong to the same secessionist and communal stock. This is not the question. The question is: What Chief Minister Omar Abdullah thinks about his political advisor? He has to take a clear-cut stand on Gul and his stand on the Geelanis and the Mirwaizs. If he still retains him as his political advisor, it shall be presumed that the Chief Minister is entirely in accord with his political advisor. In other words, no action against Mubarak Gul after what he has said about Geelani and the Mirwaiz, as also about the "killers of the innocent youth", would automatically mean that the Chief Minister is also on the same page.
Hence, it is for the Chief Minister to clear his stand. The sooner he does so the better. He has to tell the people of the state who of the two - he and his political advisor - is wrong.
