No additional tax on pilgrim vehicles
8/28/2010 12:06:46 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
NEW DELHI, Aug 27: The Centre today said no additional tax was being levied on the vehicles going to Amarnath and Vaishno Devi pilgrimages in Jammu and Kashmir from outside the state.
In reply to an unstarred question in the Lok Sabha, minister of state for finance, S S Palanimanickan said the J&K government was levying a tax of Rs 2000 per day on all India tourist vehicles entering the state from Lakhanpur.
While the vehicles carrying pilgrims to the holy cave of Mata Vaishno Devi were being charged the tax of Rs 2000 for a period of 3 days, the vehicles carrying pilgrims to Amarnath yatra were being charged the tax of Rs 2000 for a period of seven days, he added. He said it was not correct to say that J&K government was levying additional tax on vehicles going to the Vaishno Devi and Amarnath pilgrimages.
Taxation of Motor vehicles falls under the purview of state governments as per the seventh schedule of Constitution of India and central government cannot direct the state government to change the tax rate on vehicles, he added.
