CM assures more escort vehicles, fuel supply restored to valley | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 27: Jammu and Kashmir Oil Tankers Owners' Association today decided to restore fuel supply in Kashmir Valley following the assurance given by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that fool proof security would be provided henceforth to the drivers and cleaners of oil tankers dispatched for Kashmir Valley. Chief Minister's Assuarnce came in a meeting of the representatives of Oil Tanker Owners Association at Srinagar prompting the latter to suspend the day long strike. The fuel supply to Valley had been stopped in protest against the brunt of violence and harassment drivers have been facing at the hands of protestors at various places on National Highway enroute Srinagar. Even as the strike has been called off, the Association has made it clear that the strike would be called off only after assessing the situation in Kashmir. However a convoy of oil tankers was dispatched to Pampore, Awantipura and Pahalgam today while normal supply would be restored from tomorrow. "We have decided to suspend our strike on the assurances of the Chief Minister who has assured us for providing foolproof security arrangements in Kashmir Valley," president of Oil Tankers Owner's Association, Annan Sharma said.. The representatives of the Association contended that Chief Minister has agreed to fulfill all the demands of the association including fool proof security to oil tankers in Kashmir Valley and their onwards journey, shifting of Jammu oil depot and hassle free entry of oil tankers in both capital cities of the State. A four-member delegation of Oil Tankers Association comprising Ranjeet Singh, Devinder Singh, Anan Sharma and Gurvinder Singh met the Chief Minister in Srinagar and discussed in detail the issues which forced them to suspend fuel supply. "We apprised the Chief Minister about the ground realities……he assured that more escort vehicles would be provided to oil tankers ferrying petroleum products to Kashmir Valley" He assured that security would be stepped up en route particularly from Qazigund to Srinagar and then for onward journey," Sharma said. "It has been decided that oil tankers would move to and fro on Kashmir Valley roads at 11:00 a.m and 4:00 p.m and that too, with escort vehicles of security personnel so that drivers and co-drivers is saved from miscreants," he said, adding "The Chief Minister also agreed to our demand of shifting of Jammu oil depot from its existing site to Raya Morh The Association had stopped the supply of petroleum products to various parts of the state from August 25, including Jammu on August 26 in protest against alleged assault and harassment of two drivers by a mob in Bijbehara. It, however restored fuel supply in Jammu on Thursday evening meeting with Divisinal Commissioner Dr Pawan Kotwal . In the meeting they were assured that Chief Minister has invited the representatives of the association for dialogue to end the deadlock. |
