Rains wreak havoc in Jammu city | Residents alarmed as old structures begin crumbling | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 28: Normal monsoon might have brought smiles on the faces of the farmers but for the residents of old city especially those living in old and custodian houses, rains have bought grief and an impending danger of house collapse. Residents living in the close vicinity of these structures have been informing the concerned office of the Jammu Municipal corporation and in case of evacuee property to the office of the custodian general to grant permission to demolish unfit structures to prevent mishap but numerous calls and appeals seem to have fallen on deaf ears. On Saturday a group of residents living in old city area of Lakdatta bazaar made desperate bid to seek an audience with concerned authorities of Jammu municipal corporation urging them to demolish the structures in their presence so that any mishap in thickly populated streets could be prevented. Ashok Sodhi, a resident living close to one such evacuee property house said that more than one week has passed when they last approached Jammu Muncipal Corporation (JMC) for seeking direction from the concerned authorities to declare the building as unsafe structure and demolish it. But more than one week has passed, action on ground is still missing. Urging the concerned authorities to expedite necessary paper work, local shopkeepers and residents have appealed JMC authorities to send their inspection team to decide future course of action with regard to demolishing these structures. A random survey in the walled city revealed that more than one dozen structures are posing risk to masses and timely action is needed to prevent mishaps.
