Kashmir, a blind widow and 80 days of strike | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 28: Her call for help was well responded by her “savior” who happens to be a scribe. Her ration had exhausted that day and she was worried for genuine reasons. It was the 65th day of strike in Kashmir but her “savior” rushed to her with help. Alas! She could see his face because she cannot see now. Her eyes dried up two years ago by “shedding too many tears.” Shameema, 45, lived happily with her husband Manzoor Ahmad near Eidgah, Srinagar. Keen to give good education to her sons, she urged her husband repeatedly to concentrate more on his work. However, he being a member of a pro-resistance organization gave enough time to what he called `Kashmir cause’. Her worst fears came true during a nocturnal raid on her house in 1996. Her husband was killed as she and her minor sons watched helplessly. The incident affected her elder son’s nerves so adversely that he turned an idiot. Zahid did not know what had befallen his family. Shaheema had nobody to fall back upon. The sordid tale did not end here. Her elder son’s condition worsened with every passing day. Then came a time when she had to tie him with a rope in her Lal Bazaar residence, which she somehow managed with the help of relatives and well wishers. Zahid went to school and performed well. Shameema is living on charity. The quest for justice took her from pillar to post. In 2004, she got yet another shock. Her elder son passed away. “I do not know how to express my feelings. I miss him badly but the death ended his woes,” a sobbing Shaheema said. Shaheema struggled valiantly. She had learnt the `art’ of withholding her sobs but the tears never deserted her. One morning when she woke up to prepare Zahid for school, her sight failed her. She had turned blind. Some money was raised for her treatment in Delhi and Amritsar but all in vain. “She can never see again”, the doctors attending her said. Zahid was a brilliant student but failed in matriculation examination three times in the past two years. His failure has shocked his teachers. “I have to look after my blind mother all the time. I hardly find time to study. I have no regrets”, he said. Shaheema also has no regrets. “My slain husband’s face shall remain there in my optic centre for ever. I do not want to see anything else.” She is all praise for the scribe. “But for his help, I and my son would have starved”, she said. |
