52 school children hurt as minibus falls into gorge | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT RAJOURI, Aug 28: At least 52 school children were wounded, five of them critically, when an overloaded private school minibus carrying them skidded off the road and fell into a gorge at Narian in Nowshera area of Rajouri today. The incident occured at about 7.35 am when the minibus (JK02D/3085) was carrying students from Bhatta area to New National Public School at Khokar, Nowshera. Police sources said the vehicle carried 52 students against its seating capacity of 30. When it reached Narian, its driver could not negotiate a sharp curve as a result of which it fell into a 200-ft deep gorge, resulting in injuries to all the 52 students travelling in it, the sources added. Soon after the mishap, police parties rushed to the spot. Locals helped in the rescue operation and shifted the injured to the Nowshera sub-district hospital. Following deterioration in their condition, five of the students were referred to the GMC Hospital, Jammu. They were identified as Harish Singh, son Sarnath Singh of Bhatta, Ajanat Ali, son Mohammad Razaq of Bhatta, Sahil Sikander, son of Mohammad Razaq of Anayatpur, Jagdeep Kour, daughter of Bachan Singh of Bhatta and Jasmeet Kour, daughter of Harpal Singh of Rajpura Qumila. All the injured undergoing treatment at Nowshera hospital are from Bhatta, Rajpura and Narian areas. Police had registered FIR in the case and arrested the minibus driver. Parents of the injured students have asked the authorities concerned to take action against the school management for encouraging overloading in their buses. |
